Hi Everyone,

I am basically wondering if anybody has done or has experience of having a foal via embryo transfer as it is something I know very little about and have had varied opinions regarding the costs.

I am hoping to breed a dressage foal out of a friends graded Furst Heinrich beautiful mare who's already had a lovely first foal. I would hope to do this through a fantastic donor mare who would be put to an elite dressage stallion.

If anybody could give me some advice it would be very much appreciated !

Thanks :)

I have done it this year and it has gone very smoothly (once the mare got her act in gear and started cycling after the bad winter)
I opted to send her away to the stud where the stallion stands, which also happens to be where one of the best stud vets in the country works. He has been exceptional- I would recommend only using someone experienced in the procedure as it gets very expensive if you have to keep repeating. Bear in mind that only having one recip mare makes the chances of success decrease, but I did it with mine after my other recip proved unsuitable.

I started with a budget of £5000 for everything and should come comfortably within that because although they've been at stud for a long time, hopefully (fingers crossed for the heartbeat scan!), the first flush and transfer were successful. I think it was a realistic budget and what I would recommend setting as costs rapidly increase with veterinary work

Thankyou for your helpful post !

Firstly good luck for the first heartbeat !.
Was your budget inclusive of the stallion covering fee ?.have you an idea solely on the transfer plus extra vet costs ?

Thankyou !

Yes, that includes stud fee and all livery whilst at stud

AI was £240
Synchronisation of recip £120
Flush £230
Transfer £130
All plus VAT

Look at the costs at Beaufort and Twemlows as they are the major transfer centres. Pros and cons of both- Beaufort prob works out cheapest if you need 3 cycles to get successful transfer as it's an all in one fee

Thankyou so much for the advice !, you've given me a great idea of how to go about it. May I ask what type of foal you were breeding ?

A fun sj/eventer for me to hopefully go intermediate BE and 1.30 BSJA. Dam is an event bred mare who went int herself but is more suited to sj, I've put her to an sj stallion who is strong in her weak areas and should produce the dual purpose horse I want. I chose embryo transfer as she is very precious to me so I dont want to risk her

I don't blame you !, Thankyou for your help and the best of luck !
