Just wondering if anyone has started turning out at night and in during day yet?! Desperate to but dont want to be too premature....will pron start peeing it down as soon as I do!
Mine have had the last two night out and they are loving it. One was ready to go out, she was trashing her bed, the old boy prefers to be out, he doesn't get so stiff and the two TB's were just starting to get a little on the sharpe side, so all in all we are a happy family, although it could all change if the weather gets bad again......
Ours are living out 24/7 as of last weekend. But my mare is only out during the day atm as she had spent so long in without any t/out i dont want her to go and get collic or explode.
Well we save a little as ours go out 24/7, so not much bedding required. And, if the grass eventually grows, hardly any hay. Everything else the same cost.
well yes if out 24/7 I can see you would save on bedding and maybe feed but OP says in during the day and out at night and I can't understand how that would save money?
Because when they're in during the day, it's about 8 hours in the stable instead of 16, which means roughly half as much muck produced (saves on bedding, say 1 bale/week instead of 2), less hay required as out 16 hours a day, instead of being in 16 hours a day. In simple terms, your hay/bedding costs roughly halve.
Not exactly big money, but "every little helps" as they say...
Mine have been out at night for ages (seriously rugged up but I have relented if its a nasty night), and in during the day. Actually they haven't spent too many nights in at all over the winter (thank god) and they've all been fine. (We are in East Sussex and I don't think it's been arctic cold despite really wet)
save loads of money on bedding and hay. My boys go from 2-3 bales of shavings a week each to 1 and prob 1/3 bale of hay a day instead of 1 bale. Also, much heap doesnt get as big as less bedding so doesnt need to be taken away as much and most importantly it saves me about 1 hour a day in mucking out!!!!
