took on a lame horse got it sound then re broke it in its teens???

the horse im on about is slighlty lame but ive known it since it was 3 it is now 12 and i know exactly whats wrong with it just owner cant be bothered to spend time and money getting him right. he also hasnt been rode for about 5 years but was relativly good prior to this.

she has decided to sell him so am thinking i may make her an offer

what do you think and how much should i offer??

he is 12 years old skewbald heavey id x

he has a knots in his back that want treating to before being left to rot in the field he did used to buck everyone off but this has been confirmed it was his back??

i thought meat money has really he isnt any use to anyone as he is at the moment

depends on what is wrong with him and how much it will cost you to sort it and if you can definitely sort the problem. Nothing above meat money, but some dealers would probably just buy him and bute him up and sell him on broken, I guess it depends on whether his owner is more interested in money or a good home?

im good friends with his owner so could probably persuade her to sell him me. he is just unlevel in front which is causing him to not stride out properly so therefore has ended up very tight in his back and along his shoulders so he walks like he is slightly lame. he also had an abcess two years ago which infected all his leg and he ended up in hospital. that has completley cleared up now but he did have thickening of the tendon last time it was checked last year. im pretty sure he would come right with physio and correct shoeing etc but never done anything like this before so if anyone doesnt think it possible please stop me

OP - see http://danceswithgrace.blogspot.com

not in teens but 9 on arrival, 10 now

written off after years of unsuccessful veterinary intervention, ended up headed for meat

now ridden and happy - we started rebacking her in April after bottoming out dietary issues and feet

It has cost though - but I didn't do it for the money, I'd never sell her.

i wouldnt pay more than 1-200 pounds for it, and thats if they are going to drop it off too :) think of the expese your going to have in keeping him, getting him right and then re breaking before you can fully enjoy him :) x

maybe I'm tight B*****d but I wouldn't want to pay more than £500. my friend bought 17.2 bay id mare as broodmare/light hack for £795 cos of accident in hunting field which means she goes approx 2/10 lame in hard work ie: hunting and she is fourteen now but she bred stunning foal to TB stallion Mount Holly. anyway thats besides the pt I just used it as example like I say, for me; £500 tops, my work colleague says £695.take into account vets fees other costs tho.

to give him a chance then yes, but be very prepared for it not to work. What worries me is that he has been lame in front and what has caused this, I understand that you feel you can sort out the secondary effects i.e. back stiffness etc with physio but my main concern is how the back got bad and what has happened with the front feet. My Irish Draught at 4 years old did his collateral ligaments in his front coffin joints which then led to Stifle problems.
I would try and find the cause of the front legs first to see if it is worth sorting the other issues out as you might get the back and everything sorted but then have the same problems again in front.

this horse has been on the same yard as me since it was two and half years old. back specialist has been out prior and said his lameness is mainly due to muscle tightness, bad feet care and being overweight. ive also spoken to the vet (yesterday) who treated his leg at the time and he told me he has scare tissue but with regular shoeing, weightloss and gentle regular exercise to build him up again he should come right.
bit annoyed to be honest as went to all this trouble speaking to vet and yard owner about taking him on. negotiated a price for him which we both agreed then she txt me last night and said she had changed her mine. was very annoyed. she cant be bothered with him and hasnt done for years so cant understand while shes letting him go to waste

Give her all the rubbish about she can see him whenever she likes etc etc, failing that get the cash and waft it she may well just bite your hand off.

He sounds like a sweet horse. Shame about the owner! Keep us informed.
