Hello I arrived at the yard about 4 yesterday afternoon went to bring my youngster in and she had a huge gash from the bottom of her ear across her head so I called the vet out and to cut a long story short it's been stitched up but it was so deep the vet could touch her skull and any deeper she would of had to be put down the weird thing is I checked the whole field couldn't find anything she shares the field with her mum who doesn't have back shoes and the wound is so clean no hair missing. Has anyone else had anything similar happen?
 
Yes, 2 yr old filly in a field with two other unshod mares, big gash on her shoulder, no sign of anything that could have caused it.

We think maybe rolling on a stone or flint in the field.

It's just really odd can't find anything I wouldn't say the land is stoney and no signs of any blood the wound was easy to stitched which was a good thing the edges were so clean they met perfectly together.
 
Yes I had a horse who came in with a razor sharp cut across his throat and I scoured the field to find out what caused it and could find nothing at all. I have always suspected that some idiot thought it might be fun to cut a horse's throat but didn't have the gumption to cut deep enough to kill him. It looked like it had been done with a scalpel, the cut was so clean and about an inch deep.

On the other hand I have friends who wrack their brains years later about how their yearling could possibly have cut his knee right open. The metal sheep feeder that was in the field with him years ago is still there, and they just don't seem to be able to see it because it's always been there. Are you sure there is nothing like that, or guttering on a building, etc that could have caused it?
 
I got a call a few years ago that my mare was bleeding profusely. I called vet and went to yard. Her back end was covered and her tail was bright red. it was awful. It turned out that she was cut inside her bits. No idea what happened as the field seemed fine and fencing in good order. I think she must have gone to lie down and a stick was in the way and went in. Just one of those freak things. I had to put ointment inside her for a few days, that was a laugh lol.
 
What sort of fencing do you have? Could she have got in a tangle with it? Or perhaps a part of a fly rug or face mask? Do you turn her out in a head collar? Is a tricky one, horses seem to be able to hurt themselves on the most innocuous things!! Hope she is well again soon.

I would have said that was a deliberate sexual attack on a horse tbh.

However it really is amazing what horses can do and how accidents can happen. Many years ago my dearly departed horse Billy was tied on the yard outside his stable whilst I mucked out inside. I was on my own, the other liveries had gone home for the night and it was getting dark. I heard a mad scrabbling noise and rushed outside to find my horse with a broom rammed up his backside. At first I thought he'd got it stuck between his thighs and the rug fillet strings but when I got closer I realised it was stuck right in deep in his bottom. I couldn't go near him as he bucked and thrashed around but eventually he managed to kick it out and when I checked it had gone in about 8 inches or more. It took about 20 seconds from him doing it till it came out but it gave me such a shock. When I got home from teh yard i rang a friend as I was worried about reporting it to the vet incase they thought I was a 'weirdo' as I was worried he may have internal damage. My friend reassured me that if there was no blood he woudl be okay and we worked out that the broom had been leaning against the wall and we think he'd had an itch on his tail, so stepped backwards against the wall with the idea of scratching his tail on the wall and stood on the bottom of the broom which had flicked the handle upwards into his bum. Amazing I know but totally true. Just one of those freak accidents, like my friends old horse getting cast against the bottom of a tree in a 10 acre field with one single solitary tree in it!!!
 
Mine cut the side of his face in his stable. Really clean looking cut as it if was done with something really sharp but we never did find out what did it.
Some horse seem to have a talent for it.
