Has anyone ever bought a horse that had been repossessed from someone?

As the title really!

Has anyone ever bought a horse that had been repossessed or been asked to take on a horse that had been repossessed? If so, did you manage to get the paperwork with the horse/manage to get the stud book to reissue passports etc?
(we are talking here if owner refuses to hand them over)
 
i think you mean repossessed? if the horse is seized by the police or a repo company all the paperwork should come with the horse, but if you can legally prove you own the horse and the identity of the horse i cant see why you couldnt get duplicate papers from the stud if the owner refused to part with them

this is the grey area.

I basically called about a horse that was for sale, and apparently it came from a place which was having everything repossessed, and the horses were taken by different people, whilst under the supervision of the RSPCA, owners were obviously upset and wouldnt hand over paperwork. But the person with the horse now is trying to sell her, i called back to double check if they have proof of ownership written on some paper i can see and the answer was that that they didnt, but they had her for months and they were able to sell her.

yep, i know! sounds rather odd!
 
Well, quite simply they can't sell her without the passport, and she shouldn't have been travelled without it either.

Can she give you a contact name at the RSPCA that you can talk to?
 
this is what i dont get, you would expect if the RSPCA were there then they would have some how got passport numbers etc (to get duplicates et) or would seize the actual paperwork.
when i asked of they had any passports at all the answer was no. i was told they could apply for them though - but that defeats the object!
i spoke to the stud book and they can work it backwards, but would need proof that they current people can sell them etc. plus then they would need DNAing etc.

i've heard of some strange stories when selling horses but this one is new to me! It could be genuine, and i might arrange to have a look and if she seems suitable, take it from there to see if i can get the RSPCA to sort of some paperwork.
 
the problem is, she has to be moved pretty quickly as she is due to foal in august!
i've spoken to the relevent stud book and they have given me some good advice and should be able to trace it backwards, i've also contacted the RSPCA branch that it should have gone through to see if they can shed any light.
will let everyone know how i get on!
