I bought Monty after walking and trotting him round the field, then I took him up the road. He felt right so I bought him after he passed his vetting

Well today I cantered

He was great, a bit unbalanced going into canter but lovely all the same

Yes, on a couple of occasions, but I only do quiet hacking anyway and don't do a lot of cantering these days.

yep i bought my first horse without cantering it! in fact, i didnt even jump it - i wanted it for eventing lol! (coming off ponies)

the owner had fed him up on oats and lets just say he liked to buck

so we lunged him for 20mins and he never stopped

so then i got on him and he was as dead as a doornail - all i cud do was walk and trot...

i bought him because of his buck - ive never seen a horse buck more vertical- literally straight up about 10feet - hes 16.2hh. after him bucking with me and trying to test me for the next two times that i rode him, i managed to sit on (developed quite a lot of stickability after riding tricky ponies lol!

) and he hasnt bucked again like that since last october!

well i havn't technically transfered the money yet but my new mare thats coming next week i didn't really canter, she's just turned 4 and very green in the school

i doubt il canter the one im seeing 2mrw but if hes good il have him,but then again hes an old man and i know hes well established il see how it goes i mite do !!!

i took my pony on loan after only walking round a small paddock with only a few steps of trot - she was hugely fat and not been ridden for years so it was unfair to canter her x

First pony I ever bought....14h1" Section D....I didn't walk it, trot it or canter it......I saw it trotted up......& I bought it in the ring......it was at Hereford Auction......I had the vet look at him within the hour after the sale & vet said he was ok & that was it, he came home with me.

yup. bought our project after trotting him up a grassy lane! Maybe not surprising he has bucked someone off?

Well, I took a horse on loan without even riding it... does that count??
Oh, actually, now that I think about it, I got PF without riding her... or even looking at her properly, AND the first I saw of Hilts was when he came off the lorry (the driver knew more about him than I did!!) BUT I did know their trainer very well and know him to be a very honest bloke so there were no surprises

Yes, but only because it was a LR pony we didnt need to canter.

As time's progressed we thought we'd see if he would canter, and he just sticks his head down and bronks out of sheer delight.

But yes, I'd buy one i hadnt cantered or seen being cantered again.

I bought my mare at the sales, so didn't even ride her! She was a baby then, though. I did canter my gelding in the school, but didn't canter him again for a while after I bought him. I then cantered him in an open field and he was as good as gold. He does like to throw in the odd buck when he sets off, and sometimes he launches himself forward into canter, but it's just in high spirits. He's great to canter out on hacks.

Yes, good job I hadn't cantered him as I would never have bought him, he couldn't canter a circle without crashing into the walls. Got his back done £30, and next time I rode him he was perfect.

I took Grace out on loan after only walking her around for 5 mins (she needed rebacking after having a year off after being backed)... I now own her and had never seen her cantered before I cantered her myself

I bought my first horse without cantering her, but later learned she found it very hard to canter in the school and it took quite a lot of work before she would. I cantered King on both reins before buying him though.

My sister bought her old horse after taking him for a 10 minute walk doen the road but he had a very good reputation and we could not have bought a better horse.

I went to try a 24 year old 14.2hh when I was 12. Went to take him up but he broke his headcollar and galloped off over the owners beautiful lawn! decided it was best not to ride him so we stuck him in the trailer and took him home. Again he was the best pony I could have had at the time.

Another horse I had on loan just turned up at my house as the owner asked if I would ride her 5 year old for a season.

how incredibly daft of you all not to canter your horses when you tried them. How stupid! obviously you are all novices, and I am an expert.
