Has anyone ever bought a horse without cantering it first?

Oooh, get iluvhunting!!!! Yes, we clearly are all novices and thick as well - shall we all give up now? Or maybe iluvhunting can let us all know how we should be doing it! Next time I go to look at a youngster, I must make sure I get on and canter it round - maybe jump it too?

not good enough. At 2 yrs old it should be capable of popping a small xc. How niave of you!!

Most of my horses/ponies I didn't canter before buying. My first pony was just backed, done by my instructor who said she would be good for us, got her on loan.
Second pony had had a year off and I only walked her, got her on loan.
3rd I had know for years, but was very unfit when I got her on loan so didn't canter her then but had in the past.
4th was Gyp, who was newly broken and hadn't cantered yet. He is a little wild to canter, he will throw the odd leap and is a bit unbalanced.
5th was Hattie who I did canter. So 1/5 I cantered prior to getting them.

Yes, Ive bought 2 horses unseen so obviously didnt even get on their backs (but then they were just youngsters anyway, just backed). Another one I went to see I couldnt canter because the school was frozen solid when I went to try him!

We bought the boy with out cantering, but they were mainly for driving, and we have bougt many show shetlands without cantering,

Our ex race TB was sold to a group of ladies who just wanted a grey pet horse and they were to scared to ride her, but they still love her 6 year on, and till only ever walked on the lead rein!

Well, it all rather depends on the horse and the scenario does it not? Your statement is wrong- whilst probably it is wise to do everything you wish to do with the horse during a trial it wouldn't be clever in all situations... would not be wise to canter a 2yo perhaps? A mare heavily in foal? A lame horse? A horse who know very well whom you are buying?

Perhaps you could share your professional qualifications and equine achievements so that we can all know to listen very carefully to all that you say?

Nope, have known someone who bought a horse taking someones word for the fact it could easily jump 3ft 9 they NEVER saw it jump despite going to view it 4 times! but to be honest they arnt the brightest people.

(turned out horse couldnt jump anyway, well he can cat leap 3ft 9! but not often the rider stays with him!)

must say the one i bought without seeing him do anymore then a walk has turned out to be a total star, bought at an auction as a tiny price so a real bargain. the auction had no facilities so no option. we took a risk and it payed off. Ive had 3 from that auction in fact and everyone of them has been a superstar.

Ive only ever had one of mine vetted, then again i never payed much for the other 4.

If you know what your looking at and prepared to take a risk then you dont have to see them ridden at all.
