I'm a bit puzzled really. Why is meeting the hunt so scary? I have only been riding 3 1/2 years and I hunt weekly and they are fine except they take the mick if I see them when I'm hacking but ned is fine, he does what he is told

Horses who hunt know there job and a truly great hunter won't play up and it's normal for them... whereas other horses who only hunt rarely, or never at all can find it allll terribly exciting!...

I see. My lad just does his sheepish 'Hi everyone he wouldn't let me come today. Poo' bit, looks wistful and then we wander off.
I suspect I suffer from bliss secondary to ignorance lol

After I left PC I was unable to afford to hunt, my mother still subscribed, as she had a meet card, I did "accidentally on purpose" meet the hunt. Been a former hunter and knowing most of the field it was never a problem, I never took the p••s and only stayed for a while whilst they were I my area and only occasionally.

Yes I did once on a scatty TB who was already very scarey to hack. He got absolutely insanely excited, but luckily there was a massive thick 15 ft hedge & the pack went down a ditch, up the other side & ended up on the far side of the hedge. He didn't 'do' ditches, so was (thank goodness) separated from the pack by the hedge.

I got him home, but it was probably the least amount of fun that I've ever had on a horse. Very pleased indeed to get back without loss of life or limb.

Many times!

Not so funny when I am riding one and leading another.

One occasion I was riding a NH horse that belonged to the Queen's Mother. He was a great favourite of hers but had the most terrible legs. He was also exceedingly nappy, thinking nothing of going sideways through a hedge or standing vertical but worse was standing planted in front and kicking out with both hind legs sending the rider forward whereby he would spin sideways.
Anyway, I was out on him when the hunted fox came running about 50 yards ahead of me, hounds were fairly close behind but the rest were about three fields away.
I let all pass us and then tried to trot on but Special started doing his voluntary performance of high school work and gave the field a chance to catch up.
They were all heading in my homeward direction so after the whip and Master had charged past, I followed, Jumped several fences, waded through a small river, and when we were in the village I had a right royal battle to get him to go home!
Never hurt him at all - he went back into training a week after and a month after that won the Grand Military.

Are you talking about Special Cargo?
He was a wonder horse, I never saw him in the flesh but I would always try to watch his races. Do you know what happened to him after he stopped racing?

Yeah.....like the 17.2hh 4 year old baby I was out on.

Who'd hunted for his first time a week previous to that hack....

And we were in a show saddle, in a snaffle and in skinny jeans and purple wellies.....! And I'd gotten off to open a gate up a gulley in the bridleway, just at the same time the whole of the Beaufort and hounds descended down to where we were!

I've never gotten back on so quickly in my life. He was spinning like a top and I just got given a leg up by one of the people following on foot and told to just follow along till his brain was back on the planet lol......

Great time for the dreaded '2nd time' hunting!

Have come close a couple of times, but thankfully haven't run into them. The last time must have been a huge meet, judging by the amount of quad followers and mucky 4 x 4s charging around the roads! Heard the horn and even shouting and made Henry sharply trot on our way. As he's 12hh and very strong, I don't trust the little sod to not join in and run me UNDER the hedges!
