Has anyone ever done this?

Just wondering what the outcome was? Mine has done a few things that I dont think are quite right!

yes, i have and got told that if i wasnt happy with the vet they sent i should find another practice. i did move all my dogs cats and horses to another vet . i then found out that the vet i had complained about then got loads of complaints and left the practice. i wont go back. the attitude was so "we are the vets you just pay the bill".
i am afraid i feel that vets now have only one interest how much money they can charge you. (sorry any vets that are on here but thats the way i feel)

Yes our yard did. They kept hiring locums that never stayed around for long. It meant you got a different vet every time (not that it's a huge deal) but a lot of people complained about the vets misdiagnosing a lot of things, or would send out their cattle/sheep vets who would honestly tell us they don't really know much about horses. Lots of people threatened to leave and in the end the practice hired a lovely permanent Equine vet. They could not afford to loose that much business.

When I had an issue with a VET, before doing anything - I had a 30 minute free consultation with a solicitor to find out exactly where I stood. The solicitor gave me good advice which I followed. Put my complaints in writing, gave the vet 7 working days to reply, which they did. So it was all done an an adult manner.

It sounds like you have a few issues - I had one specific episode, so perhaps it was easier for me to complain about the duty of care my horse received at that time.

Good Luck and don't be shy! I found that communication is a good thing.

My friend once had a work experience type vet come to see her pony however he did not turn up with any supervision.

It turned out said pony (14.2hh arabxconnie) needed sedating. He (vet) was white and shaking like a leaf when it come to sedating the mare and ended up giving her far too much sedative. My friend and another woman ended up propping up the mare because she was ready to collapse.

The next day (after she had calmed down and established the pony was ok) she rung the practice to complain.

She complained that the vet was very nervous, to be told that he was gaining experience and hadn't been doing it for very long.
She asked why he wasn't supervised, was told he didn't need it.
She said he obviously did because he couldn't administer the sedative in a sensible ammount for a fine, small pony, to be told that he was probably only nervous around her because he fancied her! That was the end of the matter and no matter what my friend said the vet said his companion was a good vet and that my friend was making a mountain out of a molehill!

Needless to say she, and the other woman that used that practice changed after that... it wasn't worth having dodgy treatment and the reasoning behind it being someone fancied them so therefore all was fine. That is totally unprofssional!

I lost my mare a year or so ago and had to get a 2nd vet from a different practice just to see her and then pts. When the first vet rang on day 2 to enquire how she was doing I was in pieces at just having lost my mare about an hour before and I let rip at the vet on the phone. I got a letter explaining their end of it away, eg we are not to blame, shame about yr horse, we can only act on the symptons you gave us on the phone, blah blah. I was so upset and angry - I am not a vet, I can only report things as I see them, answer the vet's questions etc. When I gave the symptons to the 2nd vet he was there within 30 mins, but it was too late. The 1st vet didn't come out as couldn't see the need - and we put that poor horse through an unnecessary 24hrs of agony due to this delay.

So yes, I guess I did complain in a roundabout sort of way, but i didn't get anywhere with it. I now just use the first vets for small animals as they are local and the take my horse stuff to the 2nd practice who have been fabulous.

I have voted with my feet, regarding my old vets, and now am with a practice I'm very happy with :)

thanks for all the replys. Celtic gal - all there are a few different issues, but they are all based around the same incident, so I have done same as you (although I used a legal helpline!)

Yes, i have complaine dabout the behaviour of a vet.

she was clearly nervous and this turned into aggression as she proceeded to wallop my 3yro and called her a 'stroppy cow' for flinching a bit when she had an absess cut out.

it took all of my will power not to wallop her but i did complain the next day to the practice manager and got my bill voided and a very big apology.

I voted with my feet when I was threatened by letter with the baliffs to settle an outstanding bill. I had telephoned & written to them on 4/5 occasions telling them the insurance was paying the bill but the idiot in the accounts department hadn't married up any letters etc with my account. In the end they admitted that it was their fault because they had the claim form for filling their part & hadn't done it. I received an apology from the practice manager but I still moved anyway.
