a horse that won't come out of the lorry? We went to pick up my new 2 year old today who hasn't really ever been in the lorry before apart from with his mum as a foal. He went on relatively easily however when we got to the other end he wouldn't come out. It took about 2 and a half hours of trying absolutely everything including lifting the partition out round him so the other horse could come off first. We then got the vet to come and sedate him and then brute force and the help of about 6 people to get him out! Never ever known anything quite like it! He's quite happy in the field now with his new brother!

buster never learnt to walk out properly. he would get to the top and jump ... right to the bottom

i found it helped to cover the ramp in straw, its a bit of a pain but eventually they learn and you dont have to do it forever

Had a similar problem. Took a yearling to the sales only for him to decide he wasnt comng out. He had been regularly travelled an hour each way every second day for 2weeks to a rehab centre to swim and never caused any problems loading or unloading (but on those trips he travelled with a 2nd yearling). On this occasion we had sedated him prior to loading with XylAazine so couldnt give him anymore when we arrived. We tried everything, the lorry was backed up to a special loading bay. Eventually had to lay a path of straw the whole way to his stable ( which was on the other side of the huge racecorse!) and the fecker left me with 2 very bruised ankles after jumping on my heels repreatedly. He got his comeuppance - he later flew to Ireland and then onto the UK!

It really helps!!
I've had experience with horses that wouldn't go in or out. It helps a lot to cover the ramp with straw or sand or soil or grass.
Young horses are afraid of the ramp

Yep we had a 3yo who would jump the ramp to get in and then refuse to come out. We were lucky and could park the lorry on the yard. We made a tunnel to her stable with jumps and fed her in teh lorry every day for about 2 weeks. We would then just leave her in the lorry. Eventually she would come out and go into her stable. After 2 weeks she got used to it and was fine from then on.

Glad to know we're not the only ones this has happened to. My poor new pony was literally frozen stiff and wouldn't budge an inch. He's about 16.2 so wasn't the easiest to move once he had decided he really liked the lorry and didn't want to come out. I've bought him off a really good friend who's lorry it was - I rang my husband half way through to see how much money we had in the bank as I thought we might have to buy the lorry as well!

Hi,

I think my sis holds the world record for one refusing to go back in: 6.5 hours.
She went on a fun ride was one of the first to set off and get back, then many hours after everyone was left was the only one still there. They tried everything, I mean everything.

Eventually they backed the wagon up to an embankment and the ramp lay across it flat, horse loaded blind folded and OK.
he would also pull the "not coming out" trick too.

He got over it all eventually and matured into a super chap, who funnily enough virtually loaded himself and happily stood all day in the wagon...

She perserved with him, I'm not that patient!!!!
