Has anyone ever missed out on a horse they wished they'd bought....?

Yes.
I met a gelding in 2004 or 2005. Noone liked him, he was on a riding school and was born 1991 in Holland, by a great sire and dam (his brothers was GP horses). Anyway, he came to Sweden and my riding school bought him and I met him. He was brown, 165cm and the best thing ever was showjumping. He scared a lot of people (he wanted to go fast ;)) and one day I asked my boss if I could get him. She said "Yes, he costs 3000 euro". Thats crazy for an old horse with leg-problem and neck-problem and a sore throat. Then she said "But he will be cheaper next year". One year later (summer 2006) I asked again and she said same thing as 2005. But one day she told me "If you want him, you have to buy him now" 3000 euro... No I said, I dont want to pay 3000 euro, I can pay 1000 euro. The day after I came to my work and the vet was there. I asked him if anything had happend and then he told me he was there to put "my horse" to sleep...

I worked for a stud that bred racehorses and tb for selling .
Anyway they use to have a chestnut tb called Charlie he was by a stallion we had called spartan monarch
Charlie was my sole mate and really Regreat not buying him
Every day I use to go the stables his stable you could c from road side everyday he could see me coming he use to neigh .
I use to undo his doOr and he use to follow me round like a puppy dog he use to eat grass on the outsides of fields while I mucked out stables ,we use to play football we had a proper love and sole mate relashionship .
One day a girl tried to get on him he wasn't having any of it ,I got on and we where walk and trotting in the same day He was a most genuine horse you could ever met and from this day I still miss him the owner sold him and. At that point I didn't have money .
To this day I'm still trying to track him down .

My August bank holiday copy of H&H came on the following Wednesday. In it was a Somerset ad for a cob out of the stallion St Ives. I wanted another St Ives progeny so phoned up only to be told i had just missed out :(:(:( I have now cancelled my sub as i am so fed up of not getting my magazine before the weekend :(

A riding school pony that I would have given anything to own, unfortunately we couldn't afford it.

She was a 5yo half arab half ponymonster and a beautiful bay skewbald. Being really pretty helped of course but she was the nicest pony I have ever met. She was full of try and gave 110% every time. If she didn't know what you wanted she would keep trying things carefully untill you said 'good girl' then glow that she had got it right. I was having confidence issues (that I still have) with jumping and she was a seriously sensible careful jumper but really seemed to enjoy it, she gave me so much confidence. I would love to know where she is now, she was sold off fairly quickly, she was called Jupiter and would be about 15 now, sold in the redruth/camborne area of cornwall.
 
Not regretted missing out as I have both now (though Sarah-lee is retired to The Horse Trust)but I wish I'd bought her the first time I saw her at Stowe Fair I missed 10yrs of her life and apparently Picasso had just been sold when I bought Malaga or I would've had him another 6 yrs missed

Actually, I know someone on here who bought a horse that DH and I were supposed to be looking at but the seller messed about for a while because they had someone else interested and then although he didn't buy they increased the price as they had spent more time schooling him and he was going really well. It took him well over our budget and we reluctantly walked away.

I heard that they sold him a few weeks later, and then a couple of months later I read a post on here from someone with a new horse that they were having difficulty with. The details seemed familiar and we got in touch by PM, she had bought that horse.

In fact he really isn't the one who got away, it was a very lucky escape! But it is nice to know that rather than wondering whether we had missed out on something amazing due to money.
