I have a troubled ex race horse which for financial reasons and I have just had a baby, I have to consider parting with, I couldn't sell him on for a few reasons really, his health is not 100% and also i would deem him dangerous to ride! my life has flashed before my eyes on a few occasions ha ha, I do not want to give him away to just anybody as I cant guarantee a happy future for him, I was wondering if anyone has ever had any dealings or experiences with the thoroughbred centre, its an option I am considering but don't want to jump into anything. also if anyone has any other suggestions I am open to hearing them... also loaning him as a companion is not an option, he would be a very expensive companion!

I have had experiences with the TRC. They are full to bursting & have a waiting list of ex-racers who are healthy, safe & could be reschooled to make useful riding horses. Their aim is to create happy horses who can go on to lead useful lives outside of racing. If horses have too many problems they are not afraid to have them PTS.
Your horse doesn't sound like it fits into the 1st category so it sounds like you want a charity to do the deed you can't bring yourself to do.

As a horse owner we sometimes have to make hard decisions & sadly I think you need to do the right thing by your horse.
I'm sorry

your right, I just dont want to face it to be honest... i lost my old boy last year and really dont want another day like that one. I just love him so much, I Cannot justify the money he is costing anymore, I have a new baby and so my time and money its being taken up with her. I have toyed with the idea of getting rid of him before but i never did obviously, Im not sure i could live with myself just putting him to sleep, hes perfectly happy as a big pet its just me thats not, i feel like im being really selfish but since having my baby I realise my priorities must change. I have a lovely big irish horse whos an absolute gentlemen, If i sold him I know he would find a great home, he has a big future ahead of him, hes proving to be very talented but if i sell him to keep jack (ex racer) i have nothing to ride and im left with a VERY expensive pet. he has regular visits from the vet along with a very expensive feed bill to keep him from looking like a welfare case!

would my vet put him to sleep for these reasons though? i suppose its something i need to discuss with him. I recently had a back specialist out to him who suspects spinal arthritis and pelvic problems so at 14 he isnt going to get better from this and i suspect in the near future he will need daily pain relief so he is just going to cost ore and more the longer this goes on, I think i do know the answer but i need people to talk to :(

A difficult decision for anyone to make, I feel for you. Although from what you've said he doesn't look to have a promising future either with you or anyone else. I have a 4 yr old daughter so know where your coming from regarding priorities, hope you manage to reach a solution :-)
