has anyone ever sold a horse to the mounted police?

hi

i have a friend whose father just sold one of the shire cross to the mounted police.

not sure the info could maybe find out if you like? i know she was very impressed with the training that he went through

we had a horse from college go to the police. not sure when money changed hands but he was only considered as 'gone' when he 'passed' the training, they might buy them and then sell them on if they dont pass though, you might be able to choose x

ahh that would be good.

I thought I might send her on trial and have her back if she doesn't make the grade.

Although I can't decide whether to do that or let her hunt a season and then sell her next year instead.

Would WHW help? One of their field officers is ex-mounted police and very approachable. Just a thought.

The stable manager is ringing me on Wednesday so I'll talk it through with her and see hwhat the options would be.

I just wondered if anyone had any first hand experiences.

Thanks for the idea though.

I almost did! To the Avon & Somerset Police.

You have to find out which police forces have mounted units and contact them individually. It was a while ago but I think A&S minimum requirements were the horse was at least 16.2hh middleweight and bay.

They came to try the horse at my yard and then wanted him for a week's trial. However, I sold him in the interim so didn't go through with the trial.

Yeah I nearly did, a massive 17.1hh WB with the biggest feet I have even seen. He really would have been ideal. They came to the yard viewed him and then asked to take him in for 3 weeks to go through more of their tests, they were generally not very forth coming with excact information. In the end my horse passed all their tests apart from one the "galloping" test, again not exactly sure what the test comprised as little inforamtion is generally provided. he was never lame and he passed a 5 stage vetting 2 weeks later and shows and hunts now maybe the size of his feet and cantering on hard ground didn't work for them

They usually don't invest into any actual training untill they can be as sure as they can they will be suitable.

They have approached me about one I have for sale and am trying to decide whether to get her out autumn hunting or whether they are realistically going to want a long trial period which means she would miss it.

I didn't realise they had to be bay!

We sold 1 a couple of yrs ago to south Yorkshire police, they came to try him at home but he hadn't done enough, so we did more work with him and he did a season hunting then they came back liked him took him on trial then bought him, we still get regular updates on how he's doing

This was my dileama too. But everyone, me included just assumed he would be ideal, due to his size, colour temperment, soundness ect but, it wasn't to be. I was lucky that when I got him back 3 weeks later I had someone lined up to view who wanted to hunt and she took him. I think it depends how the tests go to how long they are away for. Mine obviusly did really well to start with and then failed on something further down the trial, but if the fail the initial tests then they come back within the week.

oh I see, that might make it easier then as if it's just a week or so I could still get her out hunting early on if she is no good as a police horse.

The YO where my friend has her horse use to loan her horse to the police, but he was slightly older and didn't need much work to be trained up, but use to take the mick out of the less experinced officers, so they only tended to ask to borrow him when they were short on horses. She also had another one she sold to the police, they had him on trail for a few weeks first, he was only a baby, but think they ended up selling him before he finished his training as didn't end up suitable in the end, but i'm pretty sure she got offered him back first before they sold him on.
