I don't really mind Alfie's yapping that much.. but it is a tad embarrassing sometimes!

He just does it on walks when he likes to chase around after Star - it's very loud, very high pitched and very frequent!! Kind of gives you a bit of a head ache!

When we first got him we tried a spray collar thing, we lived in a city then and when in the local park he did seem to ruin the peaceful atmosphere.

Anyway it didn't work!

Any non-mean ideas? He's quite a sensitive little boy.

They normally do it through= frustration, at not being able to keep up with the faster dog

Attention= when being ignored by said dog

Communication= with owner/dogs

I bet it's not half as annoying as the bassett hound that barks in our local fields

I have a yappy terrier type thing that lives next door i squirt him over the fence with a water pistol it works every time firstly making sure the neighbour is out of sight

Well C - you know Alf better than anyone else on here!

He chases Star but he carries on even if he's in front!

He is the coolest little dog though.. bad to say but he is my favourite.

Of course he does!!! Bless him. He knows "sit" and "spin", so does sit, then if you say "paw", "lie down", "speak", Alfie just spins around.

Don't think I told you about the trouble he caused at our wedding weekend? It was funny!

We were getting married on the Saturday and me and my friend headed down Thursdays night.. Dan's parents and all of us were having a nice dinner.. knock on the door - next door neighbour - your terrier has MASSACRED our chickens!! We found them all alive.. so he hadn't actually eaten them.

But Dans irrational mother didn't see it that way.

Then day before when we were putting up the marquee - Wheres Alfie?? He went missing for about 3 hours!! I was getting really upset but then a storm rolled in (thunder) and suddenly a little Alfie appeared. :P

So he didn't get to join in on the wedding.

Yes, by isolating the bitch from things that set her off (people, cats, my mother

) and by using very loud, but calm and firm vocal correction.
My mother was making it worse by 'yapping' right back at her!

When Poppy starts yapping at other dogs I do obedience work with her . I tell her to sit , stay , get a treat out and voila ! One well - behaved looking dog staring at the piece of chicken in my hand

Or , if you have a spray bottle of water handy ...

Ugh, Poppy's a horrible yapper, but she's even worse for growling. She'll go completely mental at anyone who DARES walk past the window, then for ages afterwards she just sits and growls to herself. You tell her to be quiet and she shuts up for a moment, then looks you right in the face and starts growling again! She has absolutely no respect for us, even though we've always been so firm with making sure she knows we're the bosses. Aaarrghh, horrible little terrierist.

Oddly enough, I never hear a peep from her on walks! She's so busy running around sniffing everything she forgets to be a horrible little ratbag.
