Just wondered as per title if anyone has had a horse suffer with colic attacks after being wormed? Horse on our yard is having repeated colic attacks l- first one 5 days after being wormed. Hes been scoped to check for gastric ulcers etc and nothing has been found.

Thanks.

We have a worming programme on our yard in place, I know owner has had vet send away samples of pooh which had a bit of blood in. So far its happened mostly ovenight, he had 3 in 10 days, but last friday had one in the field. Worrying time for her and thought I would pick your brains for some help. Thanks for your replies so far. The brand used I think was Equest, hope its alright to say that on here. The only reason Im asking is that she had a reading today with a Horse Communicator and that was what he told her. Interesting!!

My old horse was double dosed for tapeworm, what ever it was back then (9-10yrs ago) and had colic. She was taken to Langford and had to stay in a for a while.
Luckily for her they then brought out the single dose tapeworm wormers and she never got colic from worming again.
She was however PTS because of strangulation colic a few years later, but that's another story.

My friend has an elderly cob who colics every time he's wormed. She's had worm counts done which always come back negative so monitors any worm burden that way.

My boy is none too happy with the Five Day Guard programme though has never reacted to any other brand and am thinking of doing as the same as my friend.

Yes it can happen.

Its mainly seen where there is a very high worm burden as the amount of paralyzed or dead worms can get caught and impact in the tight junctions of the horses colon,it can also occur due to a change of brand if resistance has built up to the wormed used previously, meaning that there are a lot of resistent worms to clear out.
