Has anyone got a hogged appy?

Hi all,

I've got a lovely 15.1 appaloosa mare, she's quite pretty (if i do say so myself) but she has the most AWFUL mane.. and has about 12 inches (at the top) where there's a good 4 inches of length (no thickness) and then the bottem half is bald/wispy..

So i'm contemplating hogging her? but i'm not sure 1) how it'll look or 2) if i do, can i leave her forelock or will it look daft?

I did (he long shuffled off this mortal coil).
It really suited him and I did keep his forelock too. I'll see if I've got any pics of him.

he's still hogged but i've kept his forelock..
it closely resembles a bog brush when it needs redoing- stands bolt upright even at 5"

No but I was amazed at how well a hogg suits my last horse, a grey TBx. The girl does polo with her hence the hogg. I think it would look rather smarter than a whispy mess anyway! What have you got to lose really.

D_d_d - very smart!!!

Gems quite fine, she's actually knabstrupper x TB but with appy like mane/tail.. She has a fine little head and don't want her to look silly!!

When would you all suggest I do it? Now or wait until winter?

Ashgrove - it's ridiculous, Hugo my warmblood yearling has the most amazing mane - I just want to take some and stick it on her! Think black would look odd on a bay roan spotty!!

Don't know if I have any photos to display the lack of hair!!

Are Appys known for poor manes and tails? Boyo is Welsh D x Appy and his tail is rather wispy?

I know foundation Appies are - I believe it's something some breeders are working on improving.

I hogged my big (15.2) boy, it took about 2 minutes with a pair of scissors , I've left his forelock for the moment, still decid ing if he gets to keep it
