regarding a certain type/ colour/ breed of horse?
For example, (and I know im going to get slated for this) I won't touch a black horse, as the saying goes, 'you never get a good black horse' and so far this saying has proved me right in my own horses and my frineds horses.
I also think, 'you can't go wrong with a chesnut mare, their either really really good or really really bad' just a game for a bit of fun.....

i love my black horse

and even though i'm probs biased he is good and has a good competition record

yeh i agree with the chestnut mare, some are ace, others not.

If I remember it right there is a saying about white socks.
One white sock keep him not aday
Two white socks send him far away
Three white socks sell him to a friend
Four white socks keep him til the end.

My boy has four white socks so I think he's a keeper!

Thats interesting as I have always heard it the other way round...

1 white sock, buy the horse
2 white socks, try the horse
3 white socks, look well about him
4 white socks, do without him

My personal favourite....
It costs the same to keep the right horse as the wrong horse

LOL- one of my horses is black and theres nothing bad about him!

One of my favourite sayings with horses is

" if it aint broke don't fix it"

this is soo true,

my mare has 2 white socks and shes like the kid with the curl when she's good she is very very good and when she's bad she is horrid lmao

I got these in an email

"If the horse does not enjoy his work, his rider will have no joy."
~Unknown

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. Eleven-hundred pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster. ~Author Unknown

"Riding: the art of keeping a horse between you and the ground."
~The London Times

Look before you leap - applies to all things in life.

Don't judge a book by the cover - things are not always as they first appear.

It isn't the cowshed the horse comes out of, but the horse that comes out of the cowshed.

Agree with the black horse one...... I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole; every one I've had dealings with has been bad tempered to the extreme.
Big ears = big heart.
I half remember one about if a bowler hat would fit between its front legs, it will gallop forever.
A bump between the eyes is a sign of uncertain temper......I've done two with pronounced bumps, and they were so simple, you couldn't help liking them; I never had trouble with either.
Also 'andsome is as 'andsome does........have done some shocking conformation wise horses, that have done superb jobs, very successfully.

Totally agree with the
1 white sock - buy it.
My D has 1 white sock and he's stuck with me for life (poor soul)
my C has 4 white socks though - maybe I won't tell him about this saying!

No horse looks good at blackberry time.

It came up in a pony club quiz when I was a mere teenager - my know-it-all friend said ponies would rub themselves against them and get stained

(winter coat coming through in case you hadn't heard it before)

I've always know it as Juno's way too!

What about this one:

Tell a gelding,
Ask a mare,
Consult a Stallion.

My friend who has an Arab knows it as:

Tell a gelding,
Ask a mare,
Consult an Arab.

[/ QUOTE ]

I ride an Arab stallion!

I know the white socks saying as 1=good and 4=bad, I read somewhere that white hooves were said to be weaker than black hooves, and therefore more white socks means more foot problems!

I like...

"You should always make an effort to look smart when riding a horse, because every ride should be a celebration" (by an old German equestrian comentator)

and

"The horse you got off is never the same horse you got on." (Or something along those lines!)

Tell a gelding,
Ask a mare,
Consult an Arab.

How true!

my saying is "To his virtues ever kind, to his faults a little blind".

I have a chestnut mare and she is awesome!!! She just as a phobia of hairy coloured cobs!!!! its sooo funny. But she is ace so i agree that chestnut mares ar either really good or really bad. I had a chestnut mare that wa awesome but if she dint wana do something for come reason she did a vertical rear it wa reli comfy she never did owt that med u fall off, but that wa all she did on a bad day. all horses hav bad days but i think chestnut mares tend to be highlighted for the fact that they are chestnut mares!
