Caroline Horn, 18, events the 16yo stallion Harper's Bornival. He started eventing later in life, having broken his pelvis aged five and been limited to stud duites, hacking out and a bit of showjumping. But last year Caroline entered him in some hunter trials, and a new career in eventing began to take off.
After coming third in an Intro at Belmont Park, the pair moved uto Pre-Novice level. Having finished in the top 10 in every event so far this season, horse and rider will now tackle a novice class.
"It's interesting taking him to events" says Caroline, whose parents own Narramore Farm Stud in Devon. "We discovered that travelling him with a gelding is just feasible, but travelling him with an in-seaqson mare is not. At a show he normally stands quietly, tied to the box, and mum puts up an electric fence pen to keep other horses away."
Caroline is always careful to tell the starter and anyone parked next to them at events that she is riding a stallion "It's unlikely to be a problem, but if I ever fall off, people do need to be aware of the situation. Most people don't even realise he's entire until they see the tags he has to wear at events, but at our last event Mum was standing next to a spectator who was complaining about people bringing a stallion along to a competition. She didn't say that he belonged to us, and just asked what the problem was. The man replied that his two mares were both in season and behaving really badly. Mum asked what the stallion was doing wrong, and he replied 'Nothing, it has perfect manners.'"
There's also another bit 'Should I buy a stallion' where they quote CCJ saying that you and your OH would never have accepted a stallion on your livery yard, and especially now with the problems of litigation.
They did ask for some and we sent them, but must have decided not to use them.
Thanks everyone, CCj will have to drive to our nearest Tesco (14 miles to get a copy..)
No...............but now I know i'll go and buy a copy! Damn I was in Tescos earlier! We sent pics in too but they weren't sharp enough, they were prof pics but digital and they aren't good enough for magazine articles..........
That's George! He belongs to HorseGroupie and its just a pic I took of him when he come to stay with us, he really is the sweetest thing. 35years old too, believe it or not! He can still buck bigger than most of mine (max age 9!), even at his age
