Need a new cheap set up & saw full kit for £104. Are they any good? Just needed to strip graze a fatty during the day.

Fresh plate of chicken gumbo for any good or bad reports on them!! Xx

Hi, I use a Rutland Electric Shepherd energiser powered by two D batteries, it is effective as long as I remember to keep an eye on the power and recharge batteries when necessary ;) Like all elec fencing you should make a good earth and keep fence clear of foliage etc which will drain the power.

I have this one too & it does the job on a fence dividing a paddock. Remove spent batteries though after use as I forgot to & they leaked, rendering it useless. Had to spend £95 on a new one.:(

Yes I have the Rutland one on D cell batteries and it is fine for a shortish line for strip grazing etc. Just depends how respectful your horse is of the fencing - mine is a wimp so does not 'test' it at all.

I think he may test it, he usually barges through it without being electrified! Only need him to get a belt once I think for him to then leave it alone! field is about 40m wide so would ideally be running it across it

I also had an Electric Shepherd running on two D batteries - until it was stolen. So a word of warning, make sure it is well secured! Mine was chained to the fence post but that wasn't enough.

It will only be used in the day in a field with access only through a garden so I think ill take it home at night to be on the safe side!! xx

I've got a couple of these and they were not up to the job for what i wanted so i purchased others that i run off leisure batteries. The D350 will also run off a leisure battery and give more of a clout. It will do the job you want it for using D cell's though . I currently use mine on a bare paddock and to test it i just touch the tape as it doesn't give much of a pop.Seems to keep the welsh one where she is supposed to be though!

Have to disagree with you Pottamus, I had a very large field halved with elec fencing, and my Rutland shepherd (D battery operated) powered it well. I used the Tesco value batteries (being a tight-arse) which lasted approx 1 month at a time.

It was one of the best buys ever, and I would highly recommend them. Mine lasted 11 years and although still tries it's best to work, is failing, but it's been out and working in all weathers, chewed by rabbits, dropped by me several times and been quite roughly treated. Well worth the £70 I paid for it back then!

Definitely, Tina! The only reason I didn't get another one was because my friend sold her horse and gave me her big unit for nothing!
