As above has anyone been though this with a horse or any similar injuries and what is the outcome, good or bad, (also in NL)

Cruciate ligament torn do you mean? How bad do the vets say it is. My RI had this and had surgery to repair it. He's fine again. Not sure if the same surgery can be done on a horse. Fingers crossed x

They think it is, he is going in for investigative op to see if correct, i have had my dog ligament mended but did not know if this was possible with horses as being such large animals

One that I ride had a cruciate ligament injury found on arthroscopy and the vet was not very optimistic about the prognosis for a return to full competitive fitness (dressage)though he was confident he would be sound enough to hack, hunt etc.

He had 6 months in the box with walking under saddle introduced 6 weeks after his op. I walked him for 3 months building up to and hour or more a day before starting to introduce some trot. This was all done on the roads in straight lines. He was not allowed in the school unless it was too icy to hack out (His op was in Oct so I was walking him all through the winter).

In the 6th month I started some canter work (again in straight lines in the fields) and only then did we turn him back out and then start doing some proper school work.

That was 3 years ago and his stifle has been ok since. He returned to his dressage career at Medium level a year after he first went unlevel ( 9 months after his op) and recently did his first Advanced.

I really feel that the long slow rehab was the reason we got him back to full soundness. We took things really slowly and it was worth it as unfortunately these injuries often do not have a favourable outcome.

I've been reading this thread with interest. My mare is going for arthroscopy soon to investigate a possible crutiate ligament injury as well. It's horrible not knowing how long the recovery will be and prognosis - but it's good to know that they can come back to full strength post op.

I'm actually thinking of the possibility of having the op done, doing the required box rest and then turning her away for some time (depending of course on the recommendation from the vet).
