Has anyone had a horse with Colitis?

thank you galaxy not sure where everyone is getting that he is contagious?? lol i do not recall ever saying that.

the vet has advise me to start walking him up and down as he is better and the diarrhea has stopped. if the diarrhea starts then obviously he will need to be kept in.

Afraid mine didn't pull through... But it wasn't Collitus (melanomas). His diarrhoea never dried up, so the fact that yours already has I think is a REALLY good sign!

I still don't think collitis is contagious! As I said my vet never told me to keep mine away from other.

But why did your vet tell you to graze him on grass away from other horses?
 
sorry if we're wrong and hes not contagious, but why is he on antib's if there is no bacterial infection? sadly nearly all bacterial infections are contagious in someway shape or form :(

From my experience, my vet said they usually never know what cause collitis, so the vet is probably throwing everything at it (anti biotics and bute) in the hope that it clears up.

Could be the odema?

My friends horse stopped eating earler this year and they treated the same way. We were never told to isolate him either! Blood tests showed a virus.

Do you isolate your horse every time he's slightly off colour? Snotty nose?
 
if he had a snotty nose or any other kind of abnormal discharge then yes i would isolate him as id hate to be responsible for anyone elses horse becoming ill should it be something serious, to me thats just responsible ownership

Not sure to be honest, he said that because the diarrhea has stopped it is highly unlikely another horse with catch anything (if there is anything to catch- which he doubts). he said that it would be more me passing it on, by touching other horses. but as i have taken all precautions advised by the vet and he said that if it was anything that was contagious another horse would have been showing symptoms by now ... but i can understand that he has not had the all clear yet, but i am only doing what is being advised to me.

The walking out is to start moving the odema which there is a hell of a lot there, and standing in a stable for nearly 3 days is not helping it.

I feel i've got conflicting messages from my vet but i have to trust what he says, and primarily i am doing what is best for my horse, which others would do in my shoes. so it is all well critising me but i can only do what i am being told.
 
earlier you stated he was on isolation, now youre saying he can be walked out, im confused as to which it is

and if a horse is in isolation it is because they are possibly/are infectious, vets dont do it just to make an inconvenience
 
because im concerned not only for your poor horse but for the other horses around him, unless im wrong in assuming your not on your own private land?

Does that not answer it? The horse and the OP kept away from all other horses while he had Diarhhoea. Now he hasn't got it, the vet has said the small chance that it was contagious has gone.

Now perhaps some sympathy and support?
 
youre very welcome, just please consult your vet to get the stool results you said youre waiting for and to clear up what youre supposed to be doing or not doing as the case may be before walking him out and letting him graze the verge again
 
Not sure how helpful this is to you but I'll write it anyway!

About 16 years ago (told you this might not be helpful), 2 ponies at the yard where I helped were diagnosed with colitis. The first pony became ill suddenly and I don't think the vet really knew what to do or how seriously ill the pony was. Unfortunately, she had to be PTS within a couple of days.

However, a few days after that another pony displayed the same symptoms. She was treated as seriously ill straight away. She was very poorly for about a week, then under the weather for a few weeks after that. BUT she did pull through :-)

I'm sorry I can't remember what medication they received but do know that they were kept in isolation. Neither had oedema though. I think the fact that your horse no longer has diahorrea (sp?) is a good sign and I hope it all turns out ok. :-)
