Last week while towing with one 15hh connemara on board our Ifor Williams 505 trailer the aluminium floor gave way. Fortunately he did not go right through and was unhurt. We have taken the trailer back to our main dealer (who fitted the floor 2 years and 8 months ago) and we were told that it was covered by a lifetime garuntee. But when they tried to claim from Ifor Williams they were told that we had exceeded the recommended useage etc etc and were not covered. Now we have a hire trailer while our dealer argues it out with Ifor Williams.

And I wanted to know if anyone else has
A) had any problems with the new aluminium floors and
B) If they had had any problems claiming on the garuntee?

What you have to remember about guarantees is they are actually pretty pointless. You have consumer rights under the Sale of Goods Act which are more comprehensive than a supplier guarantee.

For instance, I bought some glasses and the coating fell off after 2 years. The optician said the guarantee was for 1 year, I called the local Trading Standards office and they told me that spectacles are expected to last for 5 years, so it is irrelevant that the optician only offers a 1 year guarantee. I quoted the Sale of Goods Act and got new specs.

So, you need to contact your local Trading Standards office and speak to them about this.

I personnally havent had any problems but I did read somewhere that the new ali floors werent all they were made out to be, ie problems and rotting (although they say ali doesnt rot) etc. Im sure it was on here I read it, maybe try using the search function.
Keep us informed, Im interested as Im sure others will be to know what you find out.

Would you mind telling me what they meant when they said you had exceeded the recommended usage? I have a roughly 10 year old Ifor with an alloy floor fitted 2 years ago, so you will be able to work out why I'm interested...

How do they know that you have exceeded the recommended usage anyway!!!! and for that matter what is the recommended usage.... surely you can use it as much as you like

WTF is recommended useage and why, it is has a lifetime guarantee is it therefore not guaranteed

??

Seems like a case of sloping shoulders - phone up IW direct and speak to them and tell them you're planning to contact trading standards if they don't deal with it pronto.

Thanks for your comments!

Here is an update:
The dealer is replacing the floor for free and are taking it up if Ifor Williams themselves. They have now changed why they are contesting it and are saying it failed due to corrosion which was caused by us not keeping it properly. It is kept outside but we have it serviced every year so I think we keep it properly. Not really sure what they mean with this but at least the dealer is on our side!
