As I have frequently said, Islay (greyhound aged 10) only has her 4 canine teeth left now - the vets didn't want to take them out for obvious reasons. I have noticed that she is increasingly licking her lips and appearing a bit uncomfortable around her mouth, so I fear a trip to the vets will be coming up :( Her canine teeth are in pretty awful condition, tartar around the top half and the gums are receding :(

I am, of course, terrified not only of her having an anaesthetic but having to have those big teeth taken out - has anyone had this done with their dog, to try & reassure me?

My 12 yr old JRT has had 3 out...very straightforward and has no problems other than his tongue falling out a bit simetimes ;)

lots at work have them taken out, it is generally older dogs who have gum recession so the teeth are loose anyway, vets should offer bloods being run to test for liver and kidney function and depending on results may suggest fluids to support her system during surgery

Oh god yes, I would always have bloods done with her and always have her on a drip during surgery just in case - she has had multiple dentals in the time I have had her! It is only that they are the canine teeth, the vets said they are always very reluctant to remove those because they are so big and the roots go into the jaw a long way. Having greyhounds mean that dentals (and dogs with no teeth!) are a way of life for me :D :D

Thanks twiggy2 - I know I shouldn't have favourites, but she is the apple of my eye and is disgustingly spoilt as a result :) I will book a vets appointment tomorrow and see what they say :)
