Just wondering really, suspect this is what is going off with my horse, and googling pictures looks very similar. (Farrier/vet due a visit!)

Just wondered if it had happened to anyone if you can give me any stories on it!

A friend had this happen to her horse. The horse was never lame exactly, but was sometimes a bit off, but not enough for the vet to diagnose.

It was celebrations all round when it came off, the horse was initially sore, poulticed to ensure all infection was gone, rested while it all thickened up and was then 100% sound.

The farrier reckoned that the abscess had been there for over a year.

I had a horse who shed a smaller amount of sole, my farrier thought he had been having a secret abscess. It was black and a bit yukky, but the horse had been sound and competing throughout. As he was still sound and not so much sole was off we just scrubbed and continued shoeing and kept him in work.

I had a horse that had intermittent lameness, especially on corners. She was looked at by vet, sent to vet college for second opinion and x rayed (years ago before vet practices had their own x ray). Nothing was ever found. Nearly one year later, when farrier was preparing hoof the whole sole dropped off and there was a new sole underneath. She must have had an abscess that under ran the sole. She was completely sound from then on.

I have a pony that had sub solar abcesses on both front feet, after getting toxic laminitis.

Both soles came off completely, revealing the corium. Very scary, but within 5 weeks, a new sole had formed.

Yes mine had a grumbling abcess that lasted weeks and weeks. When he was sound again I noticed that the bad foot looked larger than the foot that hadn't been lame and I was picking out his feet one day when I great lump of sole fell out. I think I leapt backwards in horror as it seemed his foot had fallen apart, but of course he was OK.

Where the old sole parted from the new one underneath must have been where the infection was tracking round, and round, and round.

I will try and get some photos tomorrow see what you think.

It’s interesting to know that it looks “common” enough

Yes, my horse had an abscess underrun his sole, the whole sole came off and a new sole was under it, if that makes sense? Sort of like a toenail coming off? X

Yes - my son's horse had a horrible abscess which was clearly very painful - he kept showing me his poorly foot. We kept tubbing and poulticing. It burst out through his sole and the coronary band when I was standing next to him - he looked so relieved and was immediately sound. Our foot trimmer came in a few days later and the whole sole and frog came away revealing a perfect new surface underneath.

That's kind of why I prefer to get some drainage for an abscess before it does that kind of damage - small hole excavated following a track is much better than that IMO

Yes, I have a horse who was lame on both front feet for over 4 months with two under-sole abscesses. When the vet dug down (a loooong way!) the whole thing was black and had probably been there for a lot longer. Both soles came away at different times, luckily. Horse has been sound ever since (5 years).

*I bought him lame; the seller had no idea.

The Older Appy had an abcess, that the farrier dug out, after about four days of
on/off being lame, all appeared resolved, at the next farrier visit, half her sole fell off to reveal a nice new sole. Farrier was surprised as he hadn't realised that it had under run.

One of my forest mares stood on a nail. Her sole peeled off after a new one had grown due to the trauma. I was told this would happen and found it fascinating.

Are you asking sole and frog off, or just sole off, or just frog off? Because their entire frog can peel off in one go when it's shedding and that's not normally anything to worry about.
