I cannot be the only owner it has happened too many times. My horse reacted to a flue and tetanus jab l know what he is ok with Equip FT he only needs the tetanus 3 yearly for this vaccine not yearly. The vet Agee's to this but on the last 2 occasions still managed to get it wrong even when reminded immediately before giving the vaccine.l stopped flue as vets cannot get it right.l still want my horse vaccinated for tetanus but l do not trust them to get it to get it right.

not sure of the problem. Book the appointment, point out the specific drug needed and ask them to confirm this has specifically been noted on the vet's instructions. Ask them to let you know before the visit if they are unable to supply this drug. Preferably get the name of the person. When vet arrives ask to see the vial and check it is correct. If incorrect decline and ask them to return with the correct drug no charge for the first visit.

Last time mine were tetanused only I asked the vet if this was a 2 or 3 year vacc. He seem surprised I had asked and had to read the leaflet to tell me 3 year. He said they just normally told people 2 year as they left the surgery with whatever drugs were put out for them and I think I was the only person who had asked. He seemed surprised I knew about 3 years

I don't think there is any tetanus vaccine that needs to be given yearly, it's either 2 or 3.

I've never had a problem specifying tetanus only.

There has been a problem with supply of flu vaccine in the last 12 months and at my last jab my vet was only able to source flu+tet. Mine was due anyway but I would have been fine with that, especially as they weren't charging extra for the tetanus unless it was due.

One of mine gets a swelling at the injection site and it's huge and he often can't walk for 24 hours afterwards, so far we ruled out 2 different types that he can't have and we only do one at a time which helps as well.

One of my vets knows about the issue and I just get her to get the right drug in before we need it I also bute him before and after.

Just specify that you would like a certain brand used. That’s what I do. I think I use Proteq. I had one years ago that caused problems. However again, depending on the problem, it can be normal to get swelling around the injection site. I ask for it to be done on the front of the chest for this reason then gravity is your friend. I would avoid neck area as some can’t reach down for food for a few days.

I find mine is better done in the bum his last year jabs were done in the chest and the swelling was the size of a melon and he couldn't walk, over a year on and it still has a bit of a lump there I never do flu and tet together either I split it.

Mine were just done last week. They only needed flu, but due to supply issues they had flu+Tet. Not an issue for me as they don't react, although Shetland was lethargic for a couple of days.

My horse is only jabbed on his bum. He gets a massive lump on his neck from the vaccination and had a nasty chest abcess last time they stabbed him there (nice additional charge to sort that too...). So bum it is. No issue so far.
