I know its really hot at the moment, but Fabio's summer coat seems to be thicker than normal. The shetland too has only just lost the last of her winter coat which normally would have been gone months ago.

Have jumped him tonight and kept the session fairly short as it was warm and didn't want to over do it, but he was literally sweating from top of his neck right the way down past his saddle. In fact was only his bum that was dry!!! I expect him to be sweaty after working in this heat but does seem a lot more than normal. I'm seriously debating giving him a clip. Never have in the summer before but would rather he was comfortable.

Has anyone else had to clip in the summer? Is anyone elses horse the same this year when their coats have been finer other years?

Ive clipped twice so far since march, and will be clipping again soon his coat just hasnt shed like it normally does so it was the only option to keep him cool

I am a freelance groom and I have been out to clip out a pony this morning as it had such a thick coat and was really suffering in this heat. My motto is if they are uncomfortable just clip it off, dont worry what others think or old wives tales of you shouldnt clip after a certain time. Bottom line, if the need it doing just do it :)

Yep - mine is getting done on Sunday.

We had a 20 minute hack tonight (actually most of it was picnicking on the thistles, horse not me) and he was dripping, so it's coming off!

See I actually blame all the 'over rugging' and interference in general with horses' body temps by people.

Horses don't seem to be allowed to regulate their own temps now and I think that it has a knock on effect throughout the seasons. (Not meaning you particularly OP, just a musing really).;)

My boy's a traddie cob with a coat that always looks like a mammoth if not clipped and also has sweet itch, so two good reasons for keeping him clipped all-year round basically.

His legs particularly need clipping-out - at the mo he's looking seriously like he could do with clipping again; his coat is getting long & he's sweating up on hacks plus legs could do with some attention.

So, yep, time to ring up friend with clippers!:) (she does it beautifully and he looks fantastic, whereas if I clip him he looks like something on an RSPCA fundraising poster).

Mine needs clipping most summers come mid July although, as the last couple of summers haven't been that hot he's not been clipped. I def don't over-rug and don't clip too late on on winter but my horse's summer coat is through May/June and looks lovely but come mid July it starts to look thicker and loses shine and he starts looking hot and gets a bit lethargic. Then I will clip!
