We have a horse with some very strange symptoms. He has what looks like candle wax dripping down his front leg, also has weeping swellings on neck, sheath, etc

Now we have clipped all the hair off and he is on TMD, Imavoral washes and steroids as the vet has been. She has also taken a skin scrape

She says it looks like a condition called Candlewax, but in all our years of experience amongst us no one has ever heard of it. Can anyone help? Personally i thought it looked like cellulitus (what do i know hey?????)

Candle wax disease is a form of osteosclerosis; its proper name is melorheostosis. I am only aware of it affecting humans but am willing to stand corrected as I am not a vet (or doctor!)

ETA I would also have guessed cellulitis!

Thanks for your reply Rhino, my thoughts exactly. BUT the Candlewax in humans is to do with the way the bone looks on xray and not to do with a sticky serum on the outside of the horse.

The search continues for the answer........................or maybe i will just ask the vet again!!!

I haven't heard of candlewax specifically but my WB gets a serum drip when he eats. Vet thought it was a cyst in a sebaceous gland. It's really bugs me as the vet wanted to whip him in for an op but there's nowt obvious where its coming from. It's almost like a reaction type thing.

Do u have pics?
