So my gorgeous share boy is still up for sale. I posted a while ago saying that I was upset that he was up for sale since he is PERFECT for me an I love riding him.

BUT........I am now desperate for someone to buy him. He is 7 and should be out and about doing things, he's gorgeous and has loads of potential. The reason he's for sale is due to his owner having a small child and no time to give him what he needs. I can only ride about once a week at the moment and I feel so bad for him :( He loves working but neither of us has time to do him justice.

He was in H&H but so far in nearly 3 months only one person has come to see him :(

How on earth do you sell a horse in this climate??!!

Well I'm looking for a safe 14hh (pref Irish Cob) for a client mum/daughter share that is steady but not a total plod and can hardly find anything over the age of 7!!! People clearly buy these horses young and never sell them.....

Sadly, that might be one of your issues right there as many would be put off by the height unless they are a tall gangly dressage-y type person :)

I suspect 16handers or thereabouts are more in demand. I'm a titch so didn't want anything over that height when I was looking.

Must be awful though when you've made a hard decision like that and just want them to find their next home to have fun and be loved. Fingers crossed for you.

Word of mouth, local tack shops, facebook - is loaning an option maybe?

I was reading the ads in H&H last night and the prices are so low, it is incredible. That must reflect the state of the market more than anything.

Also agree about the height not helping. I just fell for and bought a 17.1 horse, only ever having had 16hh max before and I can't believe how much more he eats and how much harder he is to get and keep fit. Love him though!

If the horse is sound, vice-free, easy to box, shoe, clip, does not buck or rear and established in all paces and of course totaly bombproof/spookproof it will sell even in todays economic climate as there is always a large demand for perfect horses.

I have 2 up for sale. Put the ad up on saturday and had quite a few emails for photos etc. So far 1 viewing next Monday, and just waiting on another lady to confirm when shes coming too.

Time will tell, im not overly worried, as i really like the horses, so in no mad rush.
will let you know !

Haha galaxy maybe slightly!

I would love a massive horse like that one day as I am quite tall, but I think it would need it to be quite sensible as a big horse being really silly is too much for my nerves these days!

Hope he finds a nice home soon, he sounds like a lovely big fella :-)

ummm.... maybe not! Think he may slightly overhorse a 9 yr old child ;)

HAHA! Just slightly :D

Maybe that's the problem.......he isn't perfect. He is still learning and occasionally puts a buck in when he's fresh. But I am a pretty crap rider and he NEVER frightens me. He's just full of beans (not helped by the fact he's not worked alot).

He also rides like a pony (but then I am nearly 6 foot so maybe I just don't notice that he's mahoosive!). My Zoom is only 15hh but I didn't find it too hard to adjust.

If I wasn't at uni I would definitely bite her hand off for him. He's LUSH!!!! :D

She is now pretty desperate so has offered a loan but no one is biting :( I have FB and texted everyone horsey I know. We just need someone to see him as he is very easy to fall in love with.

The photo she used in the ad wasn't amazing and the description was pretty vague. The farmer has even offered to buy him for me and pay for costs!!!!! :0 BUT.......I just don't have time to do him justice. Gorgeous boy

Shame you aren't nearer ! As my daughter has a 14'2 that she will be looking to loan/sell (if the right home) in the not too distant future. He is 17 (not that you could tell) so she doesn't want him passing from pillar to post but she has outgrown him.

See i'm in opposite possition, been looking to buy for a couple of months and not really seen anything that I would suit. Although 17.3 would put me off i'm afraid but then I am only 5.4.

I agree with others who have said it may be his height putting people off. I think the general concept of a big horse is that they cost more to keep, and with feed/hay/bed being so expensive, people are trying to reduce costs, hense they go for something smaller that is cheaper to keep (saying that it really does depend on the horse, I know of a small pony who costs an absolute fortune to run due to being such a nightmare to keep weight on)

He is absolutely stunning though, I can see why you want to buy him.

Please don't take offence at this but it may be worth actually measuring him as so many people say oh xyz is 17 hands because they have a good topline and look big whereas when you put a measure on they are only 16.1 or 2 people get so used to thinking a horse is bigger than it is that they then put the wrong height for their own. I suspect if he could be measured and was 16 something hands he would sell a lot faster plus from what yu said a proper description would help. I know pics can be deceiving but from the one you posted he only looks about 16.2 to me.

Nope :(

Still desperately trying to sell the daughters pony & its frustrating because we are also wanting to start looking to buy one ASAP!!! We can't do that till he's gone though. We have tried to find one on loan instead but can't find anything that isn't 20yrs old :(

I have 4 of various sizes and abilities up for loan and have done since August. It's not short term loans either, it's as long as you want them for I just like to make sure that they have a home to go to should things go pear shaped no matter how many years down the line.

Darned phone.

I havent had one serious person contact about any of them. With the ponies it's people wanting presents for their kids. And with the horse it's people that should really know better.

The search continues!

EKW can I ask where abouts you are in the country?

I'm having the opposite problem and can't find anything suitable to buy! After something between 16-17hh. Only requisite is they are sane, uncomplicated ride to hack, school and low level jumping. Basically step up from happy hacker. Not after a world beater or competition horse. Doesn't seem to be much out there at the moment. :(

This for me too. I keep reading about the market being flooded but I havent been able to find anything. Particularly not bigger horses.

Im having trouble too, my problem is that he is small (13.2hh) but not quiet enough for a small child although he would be perfect for a lightweight teen/adult as he is quite chunky.
Really need him to go due to finances and lack of time and the fact that it is already going to be sad to see him go and the longer he stays, the more attached i get!

I should really learn to buy a horse that is the right height for me - i cant help myself though, i love breaking in and bringing on ponies!

nope :-( i've my warmblood for sale at £800 ono, my rising 2 year old filly at £400 ono & my mothers dream 13.2hh for full loan...... all i get is idiots texting me "what will i take"!!! think i'm going to hold off til summer if i can't even loan the perfect ponio out. :-\

My friend is also struggling to sell a fantastic 15/15.1 8yo mare, and so far absolutely no interest whatsoever... she's going to wait until the weather improves and see if that brings more people out...

The middle of winter is not a good time for selling, she may find things improve nearer Spring. If you know the photo is poor then put a better one on and get a less vague description, people need to know what they're getting in a straight forward way. Honestly described, realistically priced horses will sell.

But I would be biting off your generous farmer's hand and accept his offer! Then find yourself someone to share - if you can only ride once a week at the moment I think a sharer would be pretty chuffed at having 4-5 days a week to ride and no costs!

My friend is having huge trouble selling her 4 yo 14.2 coloured cob. He is almost perfect in every way (except likes to have a little barge now and again) but superb riding, safe as houses (we even had a jockey come see him and revved right up his bum which he totally ignored) has huge potential and if I could afford his upkeep I would have him like a shot. But people want him, and then change their minds (he was due to leave tomorrow for a trial home but the exwife has bought the child a horse) - he's only £1000 with all tack etc :/
