As above really.....

My new horse is 12 years old but is not freezemarked or microchipped.....

I was wondering if anyone has had an older horse freezemarked and whether its a good idea or not?

Only real reason is for security.....it seems that recently a heck of a lot of horses are going missing.

How would i go about doing it? (all previous horses i have had/ridden have been freezemarked when i got them!)

I'm getting my 11 year old done soon. 12 year old can be an established horse in its prime.:)

Good decision.

i have always had all of my horses freezemarked. The eldest i had done was 12 years old. I am thinking of getting charles done and he is 18 this year. I already have him microchipped.

Yeah it has played on my mind alot that he wasnt marked/chipped.

I hadnt really heard of anyone freezemarking anything other than youngsters so i wasnt sure if it was a good idea or not.

Tikino thank you v much for the link i will have a look at it now and see whats involved.

thanks guys

12 isn't old. One of mine is 33 yrs old, and we've owned him for 26 yrs.

Yes, at 12 your horse is in his prime. I had my new young horse freezemarked when I bought him last year. It's peace of mind, and in the rare event of the worst scenario ever happening, there's a bit more hope of finding them again if they're freezemarked I think.

Lol.....panic not....i dont regard my horse as old.....i just put that in so that people knew i wasnt talking about a 2 year old :-D

Just had a look through the farmkey website, i was really surprised actually at the low cost and little amount of time that you need to rest them afterwards.

Its def something im going to get organised in a month or two once my horse has completely settled (iv only had him a month and we are still getting to know/trust each other)

My girl was 12 when I bought her and I had her freezemarked at the earliest opportunity - any horse can be pinched and passed off as something much younger. Don't forget that a freezemarked animal is more likely to be returned safely to its owner if it simply strays, or chucks you off and does a runner.

Thats actually a v good point about the getting chucked off and doing a runner bit.....we have had one or 2 issues with him napping etc and bucking/bronking so him chucking me off and doing a runner is a very good point as he doesnt know the area.

He will need to be sedated as it says on the farmkey website that they clip the area first and apparently the slightest noise of clippers and he freaks so he will need sedating too. Im going to get his teeth done too so do you think it could all be done at once or is that too much?? (he needs ssedation to have his teeth done too)

Im not keen on the idea of him being sedated twice in close succession?? or is that me being a whimp?

Yes, if I bought a horse that was not already freeze marked I would do so.

If he is worried about the clippers, can you practice with a pair of battery operated clippers (or even an old electric toothbrush if you have one, just so he gets used to the noise and vibrations?)

If you would like to avoid sedation, perhaps some more ground work would help. If necessary, it is possible to get some help from someone who trains horses from the ground and addresses behavioural issues professionally.

Yes I got an old TB who was about 23 and I had her done - she lived until 29 and was in work to the day she died, my rescue bargain fun horse.

All my horses since 1991 have been marked no matter how old - another of my TBs was 16.

I can't understand anyone having a horse and not doing everything they can to make them difficult to steal.

Why should age make a difference, especially a young age like 12. Ring or email Freezemark.biz as soon as possible and get it done. Worth every penny, I assure you.
