On Sunday I noticed what felt like an insect bite between Coopers shoulder blades. Had a quick prod and left it be. Yesterday it was much bigger, today I think its around the same size. Not hot, not painful, not a solid lump, its more of a fluidy sort of feel, like a water balloon. No cuts or breaks in the skin. Hes bright and happy, eating and drinking normally etc.

Hes going to the vet tomorrow. I booked it yesterday and its the earliest they could see him.

He does regularly throw himself in bramble thickets and under fences so could very easily be something under the skin, and hes also had the weirdest lameness. Had a similar swelling on his shoulder, but flatter and bigger. We all assumed he had a fall, he was very slightly off, we had to take a video and slow it down to even tell. Had physio and cold laser treatment and it went. Came back a few weeks later, vet appointment booked but before we went it was gone. It is more than likely it was a soft tissue injury that resolved, but now with a big swelling between his shoulder blades I'm wondering if its related.

Sunday, ignore the filth he'd been out in the mud

No photo today as hes still in bed! but its the same

Could it be a cyst do you think? I had a cat that suddenly had a similar soft'ish lump and as it came up almost overnight I also thought it must be an injury or insect bite but the vet found it was a cyst and removed it for her. I always imagined cysts took forever to form, but apparently not always. 🤷‍♂️

Good to see you back posting by the way. You have been missed.😊

Its weird as its liquidy, it doesnt feel like anything is in there. I wonder if hes got blackthorn in there, or maybe had it in his shoulder and its migrated up. He had a tiny piece in his ear the other day and as there was nowhere for it to go it just popped out. He really doesnt care about leaping into thorn bushes. I dont know how hes not injured more often. Just gutted that hes pretty much lost the whole race season with one ailment after another. I thought my days of worrying about soundness was over when I gave the horses up, clearly not!

And thank you. I needed some time out. The weight of the world and all the horrible things currently going on weighs heavy on me and all the small cruelties I kept seeing here just got too much, especially when its close to home. Anyway, I've given myself a shake and gotten some perspective and just let it go. It changes nothing and I'm the only idiot upset, so its pointless.

Now I'd just like a sound dog for a little bit! Hes lost all his lovely topline and a good bit of fitness and we were just getting back into it and hes growing another head 😂

My mum’s dog got an abscess following her yearly booster - think it happened two years in a row actually. Looked just like that. Can’t actually remember what happened/what treatment it needed, was def a vet job though.

I swear this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Its pretty much gone?! We've been for a walk, just a short one as I was erring on the side of caution. Hes done about 20mins steady cantering along and 30mins galloping, twisting about round trees and jumping streams etc. Hes had a lovely time and had to be dragged back home. And its pretty much gone. We've been back home for about 30mins and its almost completely gone now. Photos are from when I noticed it had gone down.

I'm going to keep an eye on it and see what its like tomorrow. Theres no hole, nothing has drained, nothing has moved down or round, its just deflated. I'm absolutely stumped at this point.

Perhaps it was just air and has dispersed. Very weird.

It felt just like a balloon filled with water, so all I can think is moving about has dispersed it. But hes been exercised every day, for more time than today and its not gone down, so it doesnt quite feel right. This is what happened with the weird shoulder lameness. It came up slightly, muscle fibres felt tight, he had physio and laser and it went. He had rest for 2 weeks and went back. I swear on my life there was no swelling the night before, but at 10am the next day his shoulder blade at the side had the same weird liquidy swelling, not as high and localised, but this one is kind of trapped between his shoulder blades so I guess has to go up. I think my physio thought I was just a lazy owner telling fibs and had ignored my dog getting worse! I was ordered to go to the vet, told it was a serious injury now and probably career ending for him. He did have some physio and the laser again but was advised he couldnt be treated again without specific sign off from this injury.

I cried all weekend, and booked the vet, expecting to have it scanned and confirmed he'd done something awful. But same scenario, the swelling disappeared and has never come back. I cancelled the vet as there was nothing to see, and just put it down to the laser helping and started back up with slighty reduced walks building him back up and keeping an eye on him. Its never come back and hes sound even on slo mo video.

Roughly 3 weeks later and hes gotten this weird thing. He definitely did have some pain in his shoulder muscle the very first time and was quite upset about it, but no pain the second time when the weird swelling happened. The first time was just a bit of puffiness not the liquidy feeling swelling. The second time was definitely the same sort of swelling. I did think it was really odd at the time as I've never seen swelling like that before.

I dont want to take him to the vet and have them think I'm delusional, but something very, very odd is going on here.

Very glad to see you back.

Many years ago my horse had something similar well behind the saddle - nothing there first thing, a few hours later and an egg had formed, and it dispersed the same day of its own accord.

Well its gone. There is an area about 2inches long and an inch wide that feels a bit harder than the rest, but even that has softened. Still doesnt care when I touch it. I had a chat with the vets this morning and then cancelled the appointment. If it comes up even slightly again I'll book him back in, but as of right now there just isnt anything to see. All I can think is he was bitten by a horsefly or similar. I get a weird reaction like that to them. This dog has caused me more stress and worry in the last couple of months than all my others put together! I hope thats the last of it now and we can get him fit and out doing the things he loves again. Hes been so sad not to go racing, so I'm going to book him into the training session this week, so long as a leg doesnt drop off or some other nonsense!

Beau (horse) had similar, it came up very suddenly, his sharer called me in a panic. I think it was a fly bite, then turned into a sarcoid for which he had Liverpool cream. I’m hoping your boy’s is ’just’ a bite. Would have been interesting to give him piriton, maybe.

A girl in my form, her dad is a police dog handler. He has a young gsd with an almost identical lump. Her mum emailed me today to tell me she might be upset. She spoke to me after form and showed me a video. I told her about your dog and how the lump just reduced dramatically. It’s being tested because the vet thinks it’s a sarcoma. She’s going to get results back in a day or so. I’m fingers painfully crossed for her. She had a day off authorised to attend his graduation. Didn’t know that was a thing!

His has gone, theres a bit where the tissue under the skin is harder, feels a bit like scar tissue. I'm keeping a very close eye on it though. Id definitely be interested to know what they find. It was the oddest and biggest thing I have ever seen and I'm still not sure what it was or why it blew up so quick and then just went.

Still waiting on results! Poor girl is very worried. He’s ‘her’ dog, despite obviously being her dad’s.

Brilliant that your boy’s has gone, I’d love to know what on earth caused it.

Just to update this, for a few weeks it felt like there might have been a bit of scar tissue there. A bit that felt a little bit harder than the rest. I monitored it for a bit and then forgot about it. I did a proper prod and poke today when someone mentioned it to me, and theres absolutely nothing there. Nothing to feel, nothing to see, just gone. So I'm none the wiser, other than it probably was some sort of insect bite. I've never seen a lump on a dog like that before, though, not with that weird water balloon texture and that enormous size and that suddenly spontaneously, disappeared without bursting. Hopefully, I never see one again, but who knows with my funny little weirdo!
