Has anyone sent their problem horse away to a trainer?

I sent my horse to a trainer because he wouldn't stand still when I got on him (really bad!) and he wouldn't go through water, when he came back (he was away for a week) he was great, he now stands still when I get on him (doesn't move a muscle) & he doesn't even seem to notice water when he goes through it, it was well worth it!

i have. i bought a 3 year old unspoilt.worse thing id done.couldnt cope with her.she was going to him to be broken but ended up going bit earlier.he said she was just scared and was the worse hed had,he done a very good job of breaking her

Wellll, I didn't send my away to a trainer, she came to me.My problem was that mine wouldn't hack alone, the blighter, and when I tried to get away from the yard he'd start to back up, then he'd rear and do everything to evade going forward.

This lady came to me, and watched everything I did, from catching him in the field, handling him on the ground, etc etc. To cut a long story short she had me riding him out confidently within the day, and I haven't looked back since.

Money well spent!

Having someone from outside was invaluable coz I realised it was like 90% me having to be sorted out rather than the horse; and it needed someone looking clinically at the whole situation rather than me just struggling on my own.

What you need is a trainer who will be honest enough to tell you if you and the horse just ain't right, rather than someone who will just take your money and not tell you some hard truths. Sometimes horses and riders are just incompatible and it isn't anyone's fault but is just one of those things.

Its also important to get the right trainer; its easy to be tempted by the person with the "flash" facilities, but often, you'll get the better results from the person who perhaps hasn't got cash to flash around in their yard but has the common sense and experience to have a problem-solving approach.

Good luck!

Thankyou. I'm hoping someone can help us out as I would hate to have to sell him but am concerned that this problem will just get worse and worse. I've done some research and have come up with a trainer who may be suitable, I would prefer it if someone could recommend someone, I'm in Yorkshire.

I know a decent trainer in south yorkshire but it may be too far for you-even if you're sending your horse away. Think he uses combination of different approaches natural horsemanship, parelli etc very caring and patient though.
I don't have my own horse (yet) but ride at the stables (lessons), and exercise a couple of friends horses.
Is it just on the road that sends him silly he doesn't have any other objections, just wondering if there's an obvious trigger.
All the horses that they train seem very happy, and I think the trainer specialises in spook busting, which although not bolting may help. If you want his details message me.

Best of luck though and please keep the forum posted of how you do x

Sent my boy to a trainer but ended up going back to get him straight away. He rode him in spurs without asking me and whenever I called up to see how he was he didn't seem to know which horse I was asking about! So Jazz spent less than a week away in the end and we have never looked back!
