I am getting really desperate with selling my boy, after two months and numerous price drops I have had not one single phone call for him. So I was considering taking him to *****. Has anyone sold or bought a horse through the auctions there? Am so depressed about the whole thing really and don't want to do it but I no longer have a choice in the matter.

There is nothing wrong with him, good to hack and fab paces. Its just I have run out of funds and time. Have had him advertised for two months with no response and have been steadily dropping his price with no takers. He has to go but won't take him if he unlikely to sell as that would be another £100 wasted to get him there and back.

if i had a horse that i could not afford to look after anymore and had no joy selling after trying every avenue, i would try a charity and if no luck their i would consider the kinder option than putting the horse through the sales. But thats just my opinion.
Have you tried local colleges etc, i know colleges round us are usually looking for new faces on the yards for the students, might be worth a try if you have any round you.

The thing is he is a really seriously talented boy but I have been honest and said that he does weave when stressed in his adverts as I rightly or wrongly believed that I had to mention it. It has never affected his performance so it has never worried me. He is on 24hour turnout most the time so I forget he can do it.

several friends have been to sales recently, and have come back saying that nothing seems to be selling. I think the charities are well and truly stuffed with welfare cases..... have you thought if he could be suitable for the RDA ? Even with a bit of work, they need all sorts of horses..

I know it must seem like it's your last option but I think you will really regret sending him to a sale, they are horrible places. I understand it's a terrible situation to be in, have u thought about loaning him ?

Monikirk - I don't want to get done for advertising as I want to find out more about the sales. He is in H and H this week (the issue that came out Thursday). 15.1 allrounder.

I have links with the RDA and he is not suitable for that sort of work. He is lovely but a one rider horse, not a first horse by any standard but then as I am his one rider from breaking it is hard to tell just what he'd do with someone else. He has been good for my trainer and friends to ride but they could all ride to a decent standard already.

ruby82 - I know what you are saying. I have had some horrific experiences loaning in the past with my previous horses and I really would not want to go down that road again. I had a university lecturer (in Equine no less) neglect my horse so badly (I was away in Ireland for 3 months at the time) that when I saw him I rode him straight home and he was just skin and bone but I was desperate to get him out of there. Another pony I had, I sent on loan as I had split with my partner, she went to a Pony Club home a lovely FEI potential pony with bags of ability and was returned 4 months later a rearing napping mess, I then was so poor that I had to pass her on to a dealer who completely saw me coming and made a massive profit on her within 24hrs. She promised me £500 over the phone, I delivered the pony and she only gave me £350, she knew I would not take the pony home again so had me :-(

Odd that you haven't had one single phone call, not even nutters and timewasters. Perhaps we should take a look at the advert :) or a link to it?

sorry no go with RDA , if I was looking for a horse, H and H and Horsemart are the first places I would look. Also I'd let you vet/farrier/anyone know.

Weaving is just not a big issue, and certainly not if the horse is out most of the time. I think the market is just **** at the moment. My heart really does go out to you.

Still suprised you have had no interest - its the smaller horses that seem to go really quickly when up for sale at our yard. Weaving is an issue but looks like you have priced accordingly. Why don't you try looking for a sales livery thats local to you? you could ask on here for recommendations? a sales livery would be livery costs + sales comms normally but then you could negotiate up front re payment.

I did enquire into sales livery but they were wanting upfront payment on livery at £150 a week which is more than my monthly livery bill and I just can't afford that. I am finding this all really upsetting as he is a lovely boy, but with my personal issues at the moment I have no choice. I really did think that the first person to view him would buy but to get no real enquiries is just a dreadful smack in the teeth. I have adjusted his price down on Horsequest to try to get some interest.

Mmm, does he jump at all? If he's reliable but not exceptional (if that doesn't sound too rude) he might suit a rather nice child looking for a move up from her hideously outgrown pony in our PC. We're in Cambs so not a million miles away. If you PM me some pics and text I'll get it on our website as well, you never know, it might help.

He's a smart looking boy and my daughter and I had LOADS of fun with a very similar boy a few years ago.

If you really want a good home for him, ask stupid money but vet the home, and vet it twice maybe 3 times if necessary, and say you require he is on loan with view to buy for say £250-500, I would never mistreat or neglect a horse (or any animal for that matter), but I just dont have lump sums, but I could still give a lovely home and a forever one for as long as I possibly could, and that's all you can ask of people, even if you sell a horse for £4000 doesn't mean it will have a forever home. There is just no need to PTS, if you love your horse that much (like every horse owner should), then do the right thing and drop his price to a suitable amount. NOTHING is selling at the moment, its just the market, but for the right price he will! Good luck, you will get there.

Edit - Or even put him on loan for a year minimum so you have a year to find the right place to sell, or sell him to loaner, or even have him back for yourself after hes been bought on a little bit. There is options out there before sales or PTS. I would happily take on a loan pony, I have been searching for a project loan horse for the last 2 months and so far not found much, but to be fair I am not ''actively'' searching!
