Hello!

Just wondered if anyone has done the LGV driving test for 7.5 or HGV horse boxes?

I have my test for 7.5t at Poole tomorrow and I am absolutely s***ting myself.

I have been driving for ten years nearly and bought my lorry last September and have been driving with L plates since then. My instructor is really good and I know I can drive it really well, but I am petrified of the test.

If I admit it, I actually failed four driving tests due to nerves! That was a few years ago though, but I am so worried!!

Please help- have any of you guys taken/passed/failed the test and how did you get yourselves to relax?

I woke up dreaming about it this morning...

can i just ask - have you been driving your lorry on L plates with horses in? As i was told you couldnt drive it with horses in on L plates.......

Im going to be taking mine when i can afford it, ive got my provisional.

I need to take mine desperately!!! lotsof luck to you sure you'll be fine i have been advised to drive with no horses in as you can drive too carefully - so make sure you drive positively and sure you'll fly through....

Was the written test hard??? need to take it.... did you buy a book to revise from???

Thank you everone!

It is so stupid- I just cant relax I want it to be all over.

Parisienne Girl- yes you can take horses in the lorry, it is trailers that you cant I believe. I confirmed the lorry situation with the DVLA, and my insurance company are also aware of this, they just told me to tell them when I had passed.

I drive the flaming thing all the time, I just wish I can get some confidence in myself

Any ideas to get rid of the knots in my tummy?

Cullohill- the theory test is easy. You just buy the book (or dvd) and learn the answers.

The Hazard Perception bit is weird though- I did not have to do that when I took my driving theory.

You have 35 questions, but the book is enormous. You have to learn about so many things that are not relevant- particularly to 7.5t vehicles, as it is the theory for buses and all LGV's from 7.5t to articulated. A money exercise really, but I now know about different speed limits and who to contact if I smack my lorry into a bridge!

The book is £15.00 and very good, but you can get a DVD too.

Oh yes, then pay for a medical from the doctor and get a provisional licence. My medical was £64.00 but you can shop around and go to any doctor's you want for it.

Diesel Dog- thank you.

The girls at work have suggested Rescue Remedy too. Do you think it really does work?

A friend took it and failed twice as she was too cautious. She drove carefully as you would if horses in and the examiner told he she should be a bit more like white van man and get a move on around town.

Thistle- apparently you are supposed to be qualifying to be a "professional" driver (LOL!) and so you are required to push on.

Last week in my lesson my instructor said I was being too hesitant at roundabouts, and in my mock test on Sunday I went at a roundabout and a car had to slow down for me. This would obviously have been a fail! It is getting it right, I think I am trying too hard.

Grrr!

Brilliant must get hold of the book and start cramming - already had medical and got my provisional back so need to get on with it now - even got a new lorry coming so no better excuse to get it sorted.......

Good Luck in your test! Rescue remedy? Kalms?
I rang the DVLA regarding towing a laden trailer with Lplates, they said this was fine, sometimes I think they dont know their own rules!

I need to do mine, but cant take a week off work to do one of the overpriced courses !Well I could take a week off but I dont want to use my holiday up being a trucker - much rather either lay on a beach or be at a comp !
I am getting my medical done in April and will then get my theory done, did you start driving with L plates straight away or did you wait till you had your medical done and provisional license? Sorry for all the question !!
Good luck, breathing helps ! and take the "who gives a s**t" attitude, so what if you fail you can just take the test again, and again and again! its not your one and only chance and whats the worst that can happen ! You will be fine !
When i get nervous at comps I always do the above and it normally sorts my head out !

Hello Sarahs- you are right, I just have to think what the hell and just do it. It is so hard though!

I totally agree with the not wanting to do the full weeks course for a grand and taking a weeks holiday. That is the reason I did not do the HGV instead- as I had my own vehicle all I wanted to do is drive my own horses, I am used to my lorry (it is lovely). I rang around a few companies and found this chap who works for a training school in Southampton, he agreed to come to me privately and teach me in my own vehicle for £100 per day. I have had three lessons and now test tomorrow.

I got my medical and sent off for the provisional and have been driving the lorry since I bought it on September 30th. I have had to get people to sit me up, or get the boyfriend to drop me off and I follow down in the car when we went for training and to West Wilts for the weekend which is a right pain.

If you have your own lorry if you phone round you may be able to get someone to teach you like my instructor.

I did my big one last year - Class C so i can drive the big horse lorries. Was v scary but once you get driving (Remembering you haven't got horses in) its fine.... just take your time wtih th reverse and keep calm! Good luck...

Hi, just to say you can tow a trailer if you havent passed the test, WITH horses in, if you have someone who qualifies for the correct license and with L plates on your vehicle and trailer

Medical quite thorough - lots of questions about any medical compaints you might have, then tests of your flexibility, eyesight etc. Takes about 40 mins. I did my LGV about a month ago, will prob only ever drive a 7.5t but this way I can always look at the 10t lorries that do turn up on the market sometimes....saw one the other day for a v good price because its a funny size - ie not really big, but too big for most people to drive!
Anyway, LGV or any of these tests is quite scary, but they are more forgiving than you might think - I thought I drove like a numpty in my test and still passed so try not to panic!!
If anyone needs the theory test book, PM me as I have mine still and don't need it!
Good luck to anyone taking tests!

Hello Sarahs

I PASSED!!!!!!!!! Cannot believe it but I passed the test at Poole on the 10.30am slot today!

I bought some Rescue Remedy in the Tescos we pulled in at to grab a coffee before the test and swallowed 3 pipettes full- I know it worked because I needed the loo (not nice) just before the test!

When I did my reversing manouver, my left leg was shaking so much I could not control it. Emergency stop ok and out onto the road for 1hr 15 minutes.

I was convinced I had failed when at a four way traffic light cross roads I was`waiting to turn right I heard heard sirens coming from the left. I had to wait for it and then the traffic light on my right changed and I was blocking them! The ambulance went and I continued, trying not to cry for the remainder of the test. The examiner said I did not do anything wrong and I ended up with seven minors.

But hey I am now a lorry driver! First time woo hoo! My instructor was brilliant.

Thanks so much everone.

Diesel Dog- I will be driving all on my own with no Loony Plates! Have driven lots but now I have the freedom to just go when I want without having to get other people to "sit me up". I think Yateley is on so I will go there- nice and quiet for the first outdoor of the year.

Makes me laugh, my grandma could have "sat me up" as she had the licence category but I didn't- as long as I had my L plates on! Our Government are ridiculous.

I feel really strongly about this actually- I did not pass my test until December 1998, when I was nearly 19 and so my year was the first this rule applied to. It was just a money exercise.

For anyone who wants to do the licence- get on with it and good luck! I have the number for my instructor in the South- PM me if you want it.

oh so well done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im so jealous ! Might see you out and about, do you think your instructor would cover guildford!
When i did my drivig test I thought I had failed as I went through a red light and also went to pull out infront of someone at a roundabout and my examiner had to slam the breaks on ! I asked if there was any point in continuing the test and he said " just drive will you!" But then for some mad reason he didnt fail me ! It was a nice surprise !
Right I have to book to get my medical done now !
