I had a great neon hat silk for hacking out years ago and now I can't quite find one I like. So I thought how hard can it be:p Anyone know where I could get a template ??

Ooh I would also be interested in a template! I reckon I could make a pattern from an old one but not sure if the sizing would be right for all when using rigid materials. Are you thinking of making a lycra one or some other fabric?

My mum has attempted this... She's a dab hand with the sewing machine, fixes my rugs, makes me girth sleeves, anti rub vests etc, but the stumbling block she came up against was finding something to make the peak out of.

Cardboard obviously no use if it got wet and she couldn't find a suitable source of plastic.

I was thinking lycra quarters in neon maybe with mesh (like the black charles and owen ones ) and a bobble on top :D I have the peak off an old silk that's long since lost it's shape (come to think of it I could just unpick this and use the pieces as a template if it's not to stretched).

I have done the bobble hat when I was silkless :D

Omg I need the Christmas pudding one in my life!

I have a sagging old silk I could try with. I have an ex fashion student friend who made a pattern from an old dress for me in a the proper way (I would personally bodge it out of tracing paper). I was trying to think of a small project to do so I will get on the case!

My mum made me some when I was younger, I think she used an ice cream tub lid (washed of course!) To make the peak.
Once its covered you can't tell what the peak is made from, and because its plastic it doesn't get ruined by the rain! :-)

My Mum made the entire outfit, not including the saddle blanket (ignore the fact the hat cover is wonky, the horse had been going ballistic)

(Apologies if this is huge).

Plus this one, including the saddle blanket and a matching pair of travelling boots.

Not entirely sure how she did the hats, but I could ask?

I have made a wide brimmed hat cover, as I need to protect myself from the sun. I had a skin cancer removed a few years ago.
For the hat cover I laid the material, wrong side up, over the hat and pinned it into shape, tacked it and refitted, then machined it and trimmed of excess material. you would then need attach the peak, and finish of the hem.
Making and attaching the wide brim was a lot more difficult.
