using a small bell on their bridle to calm a horse down when out hacking alone.i have been told to try this as the jingle of the bell keeps the horse calm and not so spooky.
i was wondering if its worth trying

Worth a try I guess

. But try it in the school or somewhere safe just in case!

I find that singing/talking to the Dizz calms her. I sing the most nonsensical songs, trying to keep the same beat and cadence and in time with her steady footfall.

Hi, I use Rhythm (sp) beads, they have bells on. They are lovely as well. Horses don't seem to mind them at all, think they get used to listening to the bells instead of other noises which might make them spook.

Can't see how that would work myself, I wouldn't like a bell around my neck, especially if I had ears as big as a horse. Bells on cat collars are now consiered cruel as the poor cats ears amplify the sound that is constantly made.

Just have to say - the bells on the rhythm beads are very, very small, I struggle to hear them when I am on board, so presume they aren't very loud to the horses either. They seem smaller than cat bells. They are supossed to have a calming effect.

I would dispute that. Horses and other animals have a greater range of hearing ie they can hear higher and lower frequencies than the human ear rahter than receiving a higher ampitude of sound. If Cats and horse were that sensitive they would be deafened by all sorts of other nosies such as cars, the sound of their own feet etc.

I think bells are worth a go. If it works for Father Christmas!

I was going to try putting a cat bell on my saddle, I've noticed singing seems to keep himself's attention focused on what we're doing - and not what the tractor is doing outside! Thing is I can't sing for toffee an only know some of the words of about 3 songs!

When I learnt to ride many years ago I used to ride a Fjord pony and he always had a bell on his bridle. When I asked why, I was told he was imported and came with the bridle & bell and the breeder said the bell keeps them calm & happy!! Worked for him he was a superstar, worth a go I think.

I would go with rhythm beads too, they are really pretty as well as sounding good. They are supposed to help relax the horse and be good for helping them with their paces (get into a rhythm).
