My horse has been for sale for a month now with no interest at all. I have had friends look at my ad etc to see whether there is anything i could change or I am doing wrong but they all say its good & she is reasonably priced.
I am struggling to pay livery for her and my other horse and so need to sell her quick.
I came across a website for an Equine Agent and wondered whether anyone has had dealings with one before? They arent cheap & i want to know whether they are worth the chance?

Or do i hold out and see how i go?

You usually use an Equine Agent to purchase, rather than sell - they do they hard work trawling through adverts and looking at potential horses...would be interested to know what a selling agent thinks they can do for you.

If you are getting desperate then why not contact some local dealers (of good repute, obv) and see if you can strike a deal with them - they take a cut of price in exchange for livery? Worth a shot.

Feel free to PM me your advert link and will have a look - nto being your friend, or knowing the horse, maybe I might see something your friends cannot?

They basically say they will come to try your horse, see what they think it is worth and then depending on what 'package' you choose will advertise it for you. They will also speak to potential buyers and make sure they are not time wasters or not compatible with your horse before sending them to see you.
This is something I am happy to do, the problem I am having is there are no calls!! Just wonder whether they can do something to attract buyers that I cant....?!

I certainly would not pay someone to do that - you sound more than capable of doing it yourself! Potential buyers are mostly internet savvy and I doubt one person will give your horse more coverage for potential purchase than a national horse sales database ;)

Great money making scheme tho...

Many agents have buyers waiting in the wings so are often able to match buyers with sellers however I tend to agree with Weezy here that you sound perfectly capable of advertising and showing your horse yourself. Maybe you are just advertising in the "wrong" places or not getting enough exposure for your horse. Check that your photos are good as my experience is buyers tend to overlook adverts with rubbish photos.

I would ditto the above... I wouldn't want to pay for what essentially sounds like them fielding your calls and little else. Unless they have an excellent reputation, great trial facilities and do schooling and sales preparation as part of a service I think you are best sticking with it yourself. Also, as a buyer, I would feel a bit wary about a horse if I had to go through all my questions with someone that doesn't actually know or ride the horse only to then be directed on to the owner if I wanted to see it... perhaps I've misunderstood their service, but that wouldn't make sense to me?!

If you aren't having any response to the ad could it be that you haven't used the best website/photos/description or pitched the price right? Or try adding a video on youtube to the ad...

Good luck :)

Thanks for that, you are all right! You know when you just doubt yourself for a split second!! :)
I cant see how they can really get more coverage for ads than i have. Suppose it was the thought of them potentially having a buying looking for something like Ellie already there. But then its prob just a con.

I am currently advertising on horsemart, u sell horse, ad trader, free ads, preloved and in my local feed shop!

Will keep trying, there has got to be someone out there looking for a horse like Ellie!

Can I be cheeky and jump on this thread a bit?

Can anyone have a look over my ad for me and see what I'm doing wrong?

I seem to have it sorted when loaning a horse, but maybe I need a hand with selling them, not so good at that! haha

Welllll.... I used an agent a few years ago. Had a little Welsh D who was a nice little horse, but just that bit too sharp for me. So I needed to sell him but having never sold a horse before (have to confess was a bit-of-a wuss about the whole thing, far too soft!) I asked around and was given the name of a local agent.

She was fab! Took all the hassle out of the selling process and found my little boy a lovely home where he could go back to driving (he was a ride & drive but had only relatively recently been backed so very green, whereas he'd been used in HDT and was an old hand at it). So that was one thing off my mind.

Then she cast her eye around for me for a replacement. She filtered out a lot of the "rubbish" that I'd otherwise probably have given my heart to but which would have been totally unsuitable, plus gave me a thorough assessment to see what would suit me. At the time there wasn't anything suitable on the market, and in the end I got a trekking horse on winter loan and ended up buying it, but her advice and support was invaluable - and no, she didn't charge me a great deal either!

So personally I was well pleased. This particular person was highly recommended to me locally - but I wouldn't trust anyone I hadn't had recommended, for sure.
