Love it! I have also used it with the ultrasound massager when i was treating a check ligament strain.
Its a fine slippery gel so easy to apply and get off later. I wouldn't use it on rubbed or broken skin as witchhazel is an astringent and stings like mad (learnt that one the hard way with cob trying to kick the gel off whilst i was frantically trying to wash it off
Yep - use it for all bumps its excellent stuff! Have also used it on myself - I took a nasty fall last year and hurt my back, and with the internal bruising, I used it and it was fantastic - whats good enough for my horse is good enough for me!
You can take Arnica tablets as well - both you and the horse. Its the arnica that must not be used on broken skin. Witch Hazel tingles if it gets on a scratch but doesn't do any harm in fact it disinfects, but arnica would really sting. I have used neat witch hazel for years on my horses and myself. It is very good for fly stings and when my old mare sat on a stinging nettle and was stung all down her second thigh and leg, she was going mad in the field stamping and kicking, I got her in and soaked her in witch hazel which bought her instant relief. It is cheap as well so I always keep a bottle in.
I use Ice Blue (not sure, might be Carr & Day & Martin) and also their event grease, both of which have arnica and witch hazel and have to say I've been very pleased with the results.
I love it for me and the horse, but find it doesn't stay cool for very long. I use it for bruises and sprains, and I use Ice Blue for cooling (very very cold and minty and stays cold for ages!)
