has anyone used horse trainer for behavior?

Hi

everyone I am new here so please be nice!

I have taken on a 9yr TBxCob she has been out of work for 3 years, lost some of her manners etc.

I was thinking of getting a trainer in or sending her to one and wondered if anyone else has done this?

She is a sweet girl and a quick learner. However she can be quite testing and her ground manners can easily be forgotten sometimes!

When we lunge, she has started trying to test us my pulling rearing and bucking!

I feel she is worth the work and I am happy for it to take a while.

would anyone recommend a trainer to start me off?

Welcome Katie - I think it's a very good idea to get the help of a trainer. You don't say whereabouts in the country you are, so that might help to get a recommendation.

For a start you could look on the Intelligent Horsemanship site. They have a list of their trainers and the areas they cover.

Try chatting to the girls in your local tack shop - they can be a good source of horsey information and will probably know who has a good reputation locally.

I am in Dorset!

Spent ages trying to get bridle on this evening and gave in :(

she was very patient though! I have had her teeth looked at and there are no problems,,,,

The instructor I used to have used "natural horsemanship" methods of training and the change in my horses was unbelievable. I had almost given up with one of them but now i wouldnt dream of parting with them. I use his methods now to keep them "nice"

I fully reccommend this "route" of training :)
 
Thanks :) she has been backed in the monty roberts way. I have only had her about 2 months now but close to giving up :(

My sister tried to get her out the field today, attempted 3 times and she reared, bucked and dragged her :(

I was thinking of sending her to equusense, horse behaviour people!

It is so frustrating, but perhaps I have to realise she is too much for me :(

I recommend Karen Whiston who is very good at this sort of thing. Have a look at her website www.karenwhiston.co.uk. She specialise in natural horsemanship. she's in somerset - not sure how far she travels but if she can't come to you then she'll prob know someone in your area she can recommed. Worth emailing her.
