I am at the end of my tether with my horse ripping shoes off in the field. I have tried every overreach boot you can buy but nothing works. my farrier has tried various glue on shoes without success. and i cannot face another summer of it.
searching through the internet i have found a fairly new product called Shoe secure, which attach on the back of the shoe with studs.

has anyone tried them? and did they work!

anyone?

Hi, I have used them and they very definitely work. They were developed by a client who could not turn her young horse out without it losing a shoe. Now, the only time that her horse has lost a shoe in the past year, is when her husband turned the horse out without fitting the shields!

They are really easy to fit and I have a number of clients who are now using them. I am interested to see if they could be used in a jumping horse, since my daughter's horse lost a shoe cross country training recently.

This is what I want to hear, numpty horse was paddocked overnight at Ledbury for the Lucinda Green clinic the following day only to pull a shoe off in the night (fortunately I had a set of Cavallo overboots in the lorry).
This product is music to my ears.

Hi

I've just seen these posts and am wondering if anyone else uses shoe secure and what they think of it. I'm having a nightmare with my TB pulling his front shoes off and puncturing his sole on the nail or toe clip, then being lame for about 3 weeks and costing a fortune in bute and antibiotics! I use over reach boots, but he still manages to step on his heels every now and then. Do they get sore heels with these shoe secure guards? Any advice/info would be welcome. Thanks :)

Where do you get these as would like to try them this winter as my TB mare can lose hers when goes from dry stable into wet field and back into dry stable causing the hood to expand and contrict etc.

I use biotin and conucrescine with super results also xx

Googled it and found homepage for them and also a farrier's rec for using them so gonna ask my farrier what he thinks today as we use natural balance shoes xx

I've been using them since October. I have a huge moving warmblood with a short back. He has a massive overtrack which gives him fabulous paces but means he pulls his own shoes off. Unfortunatately, his foot conformation is poor - he has large cracks which are stabilised by excellent shoeing - but when a shoe is lost the cracks worsen. I was at the end of my tether. The future was looking very bleak for my horse because of the mess caused each time he lost a shoe.

I got a set of shoe-secures, spare studs, drill bit and the lot came to less than 60 quid (only 4 lost shoes). They came the next day. Since then he has not lost a shoe and the worst crack has now grown out by about a third of the length of the foot. I can honestly say that they have saved my horse.

During the end of summer when he lived out I left them on 24/7, only removing them for work. I checked the studs were tight each day and pushed vaseline down the bulbs of his heels. Not one single problem.

However, despite the info on the website, I do find them a fiddle now that he's in at nights! Some mornings I remove the plugs from the holes, fit the shields with the flat studs, pop on the over-reach boots all in about 5 mins. Other days it has taken me 15 mins! Probably my fault. It just takes a bit of grit to get in and you struggle with the stud. And the threads on the studs do sometimes mangle. (Always have spare studs around) Also, bringing in a muddy horse and trying to get the shileds off is a pain. However, I will continue to use these. My horse is never to be turned out without them.

I would say if you are at your wits end with your horse then they are a god-send. If it's just a fashion thing or a trend in your local yards then you will hate all the fuss involved.

My horse was having remedial work through the vets farrier at one point as hi feet were shocking, he got them sorted but he would lose at least 2 shoes Between visits, it was like this fr almost 2 years in the end I switched farriers and (touch wood) he hasn't lost a shoe since! Just an idea? I loved my previous farrier he was great and I really felt bad getting someone new but I just couldn't cope with never being able to book anything incase he lost a shoe!

Having watched my horse move I really couldn't blame my farrier for the lost shoes! ( Also, my other horses never lose any.:) ) The problem wasn't so much the freqency of the lost shoes - maybe 2 or 3 in a season - it was the damage being done to the foot each time it happened.

However, I would agree with you that in many cases a change of farrier is something to consider. Certainly its worth having a good long think about why the shoes come off frequently? Could it be the turnout conditions? Stock fencing ( I know a few horses pull the off in the netting)? Often owners on full livery aren't always there for the farrier visits - maybe a chance to have a good chat about the problem could throw up a solution.

As I said before - shoes secures work for me but I only use them because I have to. They can be a major pain and I'd much rather not need them!

Yes I started using shoe secure about a twelve months ago and it has been aa real "godsend". I was at the end of my tether as my horse had bad feet. It was always a nightmare turning him out as he would lose a front shoe on average once a week and of course rip the foot has he did so. You can imagine how popular I was with my farrier!

I had tried everything from two lots of over reach boots, insulation tape over shoes, equi turnout boots, poultice boots taped at top, equi boots, all either came off or ripped. Eventually I woudl turn him out for half an hour, difficult when workign, watch him and the minute he started galloping around bring him in, not easy with a large excitable horse.

I heard of shoe secure by researching on the internet. They are the only thing that works for me and gradually with the aid of shoe secure and farriers formulae his feet have improved. I can now turn the horse out confidently all day and go to work knowing I will not come back to no shoes and ripped feet!

So glad I am not alone with this problem. I just cannot keep shoes on my TB just now. Going to have a look at Shoe Secure and speak to my farrier tomorrow. Sounds like the solution I need :)

Hi I use shoe secures and they are brilliant, they have saved me a fortune and I have not lost a shoe since using them. Buy a spare set of studs to go with them as it's useful to have spares as usual studs don't fit. They are quick and easy to use ask your farrier to fit them for you as instuctions that come with them, couldn't be easier.

Supa Stud supply them if you google them they are based in the UK .

my horses is quite clumsy in the field and despite having actually good hooves was prone to pulling off the odd shoe normally the day before an event. overreach rubber boots are a god send and were working perfectly almost 6 months without a pull shoe. however she has now decided that I will just pull my back ones instead. Going to give these a try has anyone used them on the hind legs only?
