I went to a not-so local tack shop (specialising in Western gear) today, as it was kind of on the way to where the OH and I were going.
The main reason for the visit was to buy a Waterford snaffle, for Red, to help me with his leaning problem. As they didn't have one, the man suggested the bit below, saying that Red wouldn't be able to grab hold of it due to the rollers.
(He also said that it is a great bit for starting youngsters etc, not that i need it for that.)
As it was just over £10, and the OH paid

, I thought that I could give it a go, and if it doesn't work, I could whack it on Ebay.

He said it had a specific name- but I've forgotten it. Does anyone know what it is? It wasn't a copper roller, it began with an S and ended in snaffle!

Has anyone used one? What do/did you think of it?

yep i have used it. I found it worked really well encouraged my made to acept the bit. Was used on a youngster at my yard and it work a treat. its as strong as a loose ring snaffle but just with the toys and the copper

One of the horses at work has that bit, and another one used to do fast work in one with American gag cheeks. I have no idea what it's for though (although I have been told, I've forgotten!) - something to do with not allowing them to grab hold, and allowing them a fair amount of play. I think it's got a few names, the one that stuck in my head was "scrub board" or something.

This bit is a Sweet Iron bit with the copper bits on for extra control on strong horse. It is very similar in action to a copper roller. The sweet iron bits are very good bits and I used a plain loose ring french link snaffle one for flatwork and dressage for many years on my old horse. I did also try this bit on my mare xc schooling once and it was way too sharp for her. It is very strong. But she didn't lean and it should work well for that. I wouldn't myself use this particular bit on a youngster unless they were very strong! but the plain snaffle ones are good. Hope it works.
 
I too bought this same bit for my boy over a year ago and it's been sat in my box with the tags on - must dig it out!!

Please can someone tell me which way round it should go? The sweet iron has copper inserts on one side and not the other...
 
I've got one like this and also one with Tom Thumb cheeks! I used it for a while on my TB but am currently using a Neue Schule lozenged bit instead. I didn't find it to be a strong bit, quite surprised at somebody saying that, it's meant to help salivation and acceptance I think and I think it is called a scrub.
 
Have borrowed and tried one, but it had no effect on Merlin.... the friend I borrowed it off though, thought it was fantastic and her boy was good as gold in it!!!
 
tried the old bugger in it today- wow he was soooo good, going to do some fastwork in it tomorrow so i'll have to see if he is as good!
It was a Scrub-Board, I remember now!
