or is it just mine?

I've had him for about 8 months now and we had a great summer hacking, doing a few clinics and low level comps and he's been a very sensible chap for his age. The last couple of weeks he's become a spooky monster when hacking alone and rather fresh when in company!!
I know it's that time of year but he's not even come in at night yet, not clipped yet and he isn't getting any hard feed at all yet as there is still loads of grass!!
Wandering if I am in for a rather 'exciting' winter!!

My boy is always quite spooky and fresh out hacking, but have heard quite a few people saying that horses are generally a bit 'fresher' at the moment. The weather has made a massive difference, it is a lot warmer at this time of the year in comparison to previous years, and surprisingly that does make a difference too, not just wind! I think we are going to have an unpredictable winter, in many ways!

Yes, my lovely sensible 5 year old has turned into a raving lunatic, darting around the school, squealing, throwing temper tantrums, I'm glad it's not just me!

One of my horses has been awful for the last couple of weeks mainly because she is lethal in the wind. She just spooks left and right non stop. After a particularly awful line session Tarrsteps suggested I put her fly veil with cloth ears on to stop the wind blowing in her ears and also to reduce the noise of the wind. One magic ear hat on and she lunged like a pro. So I'm stocking up on magic ear hats for the winter!! Who knew, a fly product that's more use in the winter and a good excuse to buy more matchy tat.

Don't panic. Not just you. My exmoor has been ridden down the same lane numerous times in the past, sometimes with shoot, sometimes not. Last time I tried it he stopped repeatedly before approaching the lane, timed with every shot. I got off to give him more confidence. Seconds after turning down the lane, he suddenly shot off. I literally couldn't hold him. Thankfully he stopped after a few feet and we turned back sharpish, but he's never done that before and he's 22 in Jan! Hoping for less eventful ride, today!

Even my 20 year old cob has took to spooking and dancing around at everything in the past week, the other day he planted on a hack after numerous spooks and started neighing into an empty field, strange animals.

Glad it's not just mine being particularly 'special' then! I was thinking of clipping him this weekend (only a blanket clip) but might wait a little bit til I'm feeling braver. I thought he was getting better hacking alone as he always used to embarass me and neigh his head off all the way round. He seems to have stopped doing that and now just spooks at everything instead!

my usually sane cob is apparently frightened of his own shadow at the moment!

everything warrants spooking at including scary parked cars who are out to get him! ... who knew!!!

Yesterday a bird flew out of the hedge which turned my cob into a fire breathing dressage dragon!! Didnt think his bulk could move so fast!!!

And the tractor with flashing light which brought the hay last night... i mean OMG!!!!;)

Bless his socks lol :)

My usually laid back, unspookable TB has been rather fresh this week. On one of our local bridleways, there is a mile long sand and rubber track to gallop up. I hacked her up on monday, I think we did a halt to 60mph in about a second flat. Plus all the random spooking at nothing... I'm not looking forward to riding after clipping tonight!

My girl who's 15 and should know better has been a right handful of late. She was getting really hot so clipped her on saturday. Rode her in the school straight after and my god she turned back into a seaside donkey, same again on Sunday in the high winds! She makes no sense!! Although must remember to pop her back on her supplement :)

Yup! 'winter ginge' makes his appearance around this time every year..despite heading for 18 acts like a 3 yo and seems to grow to about 18hh..!! Worst time is being led to the field its a flurry of hooves, snorts and general Louie Spence behaviour!!
