Well i went down the yard tonight with the plan to ride, needless to say i didnt feel like it when i got there.
Walked onto the yard to find the YO buzzing around like a headless chicken, we were told not to go into the back fields.
The vet was here and the tractor was turned on... a fellow livery (he is only 14, poor lad) was on their way down, his horse was found in the field with two broken hind legs due to a freak accident.
It had gotten its legs caught in the surcingles of its rugs
The horse was in the prime of its life, perfect for its jockey and totally loved yet not it is no more :(
I was fine at first, then i walked onto the other yard and faced the other livery's. i was soon in tears. it was all a little too close to home as my own horse was pts in november due to blowing her hind achillies tendon.

So i have had a bloody terrible night, however my feelings lay with the poor horses owner

Poor, Poor lad, I hope he did not find the pony on his own, so sad.

no he didnt, a livery went to get her horse in and found him struggling on the floor (abviously couldnt get up, either still tangled or just due to both his hinds being broken) she then called down to the yard and the vet was called. His mum came down as it was pts, he (the horses rider/owner) then came to see and say bye once it had been moved to a spare field

How absolutely terrible! I thought rugs were designed to give way if excessive force is placed on them? Only last week a gelding here ripped his rug when he got his leg caught. The rug is a write off but he was totally unhurt.

I think some of them break easily but others are re-inforced (sp?) i think the rug may have been brand new and i suppose depending on how it was tangled it may not have been able to gain enough purchase to snap them

that sounds horrendous the poor poor owner and horse. I always remove the leg straps, but horrible to think of the surcingles not giving way like that. Such a young owner to go through something like that too.

Oh the poor lad! :(

He was letting his horse be a horse; out in the field with his mates and sadly, occasionally, something like this happens. My heart goes out to him.

Poor poor horse. Poor thing must of felt loads of pain and panic. I feel very sad for the owner aswell. Not a nice way to lose your horse...

I cuddle my pony every day and when you hear things like this it makes me want to cuddle him even more. So awful to think your beloved pony can just be gone in an instant. Poor poor family :O( xx

How absolutely tragic.
That poor, poor boy, and his poor, beloved horse. I hope it didn't suffer too long :(

I must admit, I've rugged mine and a fellow livery's horses this afternoon, for the first time since Spring. One of the things I checked was that the surcingles were nice and snug. I'm quite paraniod about it.
