has had a horrible night down the yard due to a freak accident

I'm so very sorry to hear this, it's so tragic when these things happen. Poor boy losing his horse like that when he is so young, can't begin to imagine what he is going through.

So sad to hear this. Its heartbreaking when children are involved as they look to us to make it all better.

It certainly acts as a wake up call to all of us who become complacent this time of year regarding rugging up. This post may now have saved another.

RIP little horse

Poor poor horse. Poor thing must of felt loads of pain and panic. I feel very sad for the owner aswell. Not a nice way to lose your horse...

I dare say the horse was in shock and wouldn't have felt much. They're fairly well equipped to deal with pain.

Awful thing to happen though.

^^This. It was drummed into me by an old RI about tightening rugs, and although I always make sure I do I never sat down and thought through the consequences of loose ones. I will certainly be keeping this story in mind and will share it at my yard.

My thoughts are with the young owner tonight :( a very tragic accident, sometimes no matter how careful we are you can't prevent these things from happening.

RIP horsey :(

How awful for the boy and his family, my heart goes out to them. Unfortunately horrid accidents do happen.

I must admit, I've rugged mine and a fellow livery's horses this afternoon, for the first time since Spring. One of the things I checked was that the surcingles were nice and snug. I'm quite paraniod about it.

I'm also neurotic about checking the surcingles every time I rug my horses so that I can get my hand flat against their skin and the surcingles but I have seen plenty of horses with a huge gap between their body and surcingles.

What I would call a preventable accident, the leg straps should have been a lot tighter. If they are to long then get them shortened or put a knot in them!

Bit harsh under the circumstances. For all we know the surcingles were correctly fitted and it was just one of tragic, freak accidents. :(

RIP little one and thoughts are with the young lad who has lost his best mate.

Bit OTT dont you think, how do you know the straps werent done up adequatly and the horse simply did it getting up from a roll or something. Either way its nothing more than a tragic, freak accident that noone should have to go through let alone someone so young, rip horsey :(

having lost my mare to a broken hind leg i know how painful this is, luckily i wasnt the one to find her either. she was in a small flat paddock on her own with no rug on. sometimes these things just happen. RIP horse xx
