He is just lovely, Midi. He arrived very skinny, sore back and well behaved but stiff. Now he is beautiful and prancing and very very flexible in all spooky directions - but just so funny and curious. I won't go on but...
I have had the pleasure of helping my friend with her first horse who is part bred. I've never really ridden anything close to an arab before but can totally get with the spooking thing.
Its comical really, she spooks sideways, forwards, all four legs spayed thing then wants to go and look at what it was rather than run away from it, usually likes to 'blow it away' with a good snort.
One thing that shocked me recently, (having read these posts I now see its normal), I was riding in the field and my dad, who had decided to wear a camouflage jacket, decided to sit down on a crate with his back to us. We were cantering away from him at the time so she hadn't realised he'd sat down, when we cantered round to face him she stopped dead....amazing...thank god for the high head carriage, bouncing off her neck was the only thing that kept me on.
My friend does amazingly well with her, if you ask her she would definately say YES riding an arab has given me a deeper seat! well there wasn't much choice really, you dont sit those spooks without one!
I don't own an Arab right now (or is that an Arab doesn't own me right now)? But I've ridden a fair few, and I shared one particular mare for 2 years. And I'm beginning to wonder if I'm living in the Twilight Zone, because the Arab I rode was very, very fast, but totally bombproof!
Rode her in all sorts of situations, through all sorts of traffic, in all sorts of weathers, even inadvertently rode her alone through a paintball match once without incident! Lots of overgrown middle aged boys crawling through the undergrowth on both sides of the bridle path firing at each other! And they didn't stop when they saw me. We did a bit of jogging and snorting, but no spook, no spin, no galloping off or stopping dead. Amazing.
So no, can't say riding purebred Arab mares taught me anything about stickability or deep seats. They've all been brave as a lion.
Partbreds however (IMHO often more Arab than the Arab....), the few Arab geldings I've ridden and every Warmblood I've ever sat on.... TOTALLY different story! Every single one I've ridden could spook for Britain!
But I'm not sure it's a deep seat it's taught me, as I've generally ridden Arabs with a fairly light seat - but long legs and balance, yes, definitely!! And with the Arab, there's not much to hang onto.
Best of luck with your Arab - I'm very envious! I love Arabs.
