Has the bottom dropped out of the horse selling market?

I currently have three horses to sell; I am not a dealer but I usually buy a couple of horses each year for my daughter to produce, then sell them several months later. One of the three is not my "cup of tea" in that I lent my neighbour the money to buy this horse with the intention of being repaid when she sold her existing pony. Pony was not sold, so she gave me horse to sell, so I'm left with three horses to sell - all decent, honest horses, but, for the life of me, I cannot sell them. The prices keep coming down. They are advertised on every possible tack shop/feed shop/local shop notice board, Horse & Hound, equine websites, free ad papers....NOTHING - not nibble! What is up with the market? I know it's autumn, but I've been trying to sell these for some time. I need them to be gone by winter, I've put a lot of money and effort into these horses and I'm beginning to wonder whether I'll break even - and I'm not joking!

Any details

I do hope so! I might finally be able to afford something half decent!

I think it is so bad at the mo because generally horses have been very overpriced over the summer and have not sold and now that winter is nearing and some prices are coming down, people are seeing the same horses advertised cheaper and wondering what is wrong with them/why havent they sold - when the reality is they are perfectly good horses, but were simply overpriced.

This has left many people who want to buy disillusioned with the market and people trying to sell struggling.

Well that is my view anyway!

Think you could be right! People are asking unrealistic prices, other prospective sellers see these prices in magazines/online, etc, and assume sellers are actually obtaining these prices. So they advertise at silly prices, can't sell, and so it goes on and on! Would add that my post has appeared twice on the forum so I have people replying to both posts - check the other one out!

I think it has. We've got 2 ponies for sale. We advertised one of them, had over 20 phone calls and not one person has bothered to either call back or phone to say they aren't coming after all!!

Perhaps you are asking more than the horses are worth?
And it's a bad time of year to sell, especially with the hay prices this year...
I don't know how you can bring yourself to deal horses to uncertain futures....I'm too fond of my horses to sell them to any passing person.
I guess everyone's different and some of us just view our horses with a bit more respect than to flog them for a profit.

Dont be such an arse, she wasn't asking for your permission, or opinion on whether she should sell the horses. Or you moral views for that matter. FFS get a grip.

Consider yourself ignored, as are all naughty children who don't know how to behave or to post without swearing.

Please can you explain what is any passing person?
Just so that if I ever sell a horse again I can see any passing person coming up the drive way and ask them to stay away, as heaven forbid that if I were to sell a horse I woud like to make a little bit more money than what I initially paid for it

See Potter's post - just struck me as amusing how Keeperscottage was on there saying how she keeps her horses for life blah blah...then on here saying she can't flog them quickly enough.

No, I have the self appointed Keeperscottage as moral guardian to look up to. And apparently yourself too.

Ah, see, who is the rude one now.
As ever. Those who can't support their point resort to abuse.

Not going to take the bait, sorry. You'll have to pick fights with someone else. Laters

Hopefully I'll find someone who can support their argument, and use English grammar, then

Ooh....wasn't it you who picked the fight with Shilasdair?

Anyway, as I said on the other identical post of Keeperscottage; if you have a saleable horse, correctly priced, it WILL sell.

LOL, yes, I don't recall picking a fight with Daphnelia, she was just rude then ran away!

And yes, anything will sell if the price is right to balance supply and demand, but unfortunately this doesn't guarantee a profit...

I'll argue with you anyday, Tia.
At least you're relatively polite, and can actually compose a counter-argument. And you don't take it personally (I hope).
Daphnelia must have stopped running by now!
Come back Daph, I'm not after you!
S

I never take anything personally - this place really doesn't take me "up there" on emotional stakes I'm afraid.
smile.gif

Poor Daphnelia, too hot in this kitchen for her methinks.

I didnt run away, Im here! Nothing personal meant, was a tad grumpy yesterday. Apologies if I offended.
To be fair I didnt read keepers cottage other thread antics...

- I'll forgive you if you explain to me what 'Laters all' means? I don't understand it, or your earlier post which just said 'Laters'?
