Oh my God - you have to be joking! One of my clients reckons I am advertising my horses too cheaply and therefore people think there's a problem with them! What do you think? I'm also in the market for a middle aged (say, 14-15 year old) PN schoolmaster/mistress for daughter. Thought I'd pick up a bargain at this time of year!
I think you must be looking in all the wrong places then, as there are still some decent horses around for well under 10K and many nice allrounders for under 5K.
Well just this one page throws up a number of horses all under 10K. I haven't read any of the adverts but this page is not untypical of what is available out there for reasonable money.
To Keeperscottage....people on here have given constructive advice in the past if given the chance to critique the ads.....could you possibly post a link to the ads so people can comment...I think that's allowed under T and C (we will be corrected, no doubt, if not!)
I am selling a multitalented ex Intermediate eventer, 13 years old, very attractive. Fantastic dressage, 100% safe on roads. PN/Nov schoolmaster. 16 1 - 2, for 6k but have not had any interest yet. Now I think he is a bargain, particularly in terms of his fantastic temperament. Others think he should come ready gift wrapped for Xmas with a but 1 get 1 free offer.
I thought the prices in H & H a month ago were crazy - as you say £15k for something that "might" go on and all the other prices catching up. I thought in last week's there was a fall.
I can't sell a bungalow either.
I think people are just not wanting to spend at the moment, the economic news is not that good - not bad, but not as good as a couple of years ago. No one is loosing their jobs and interest rates are not going up a lot, but the small rise gave everyone a bit of a jolt.
Pity I haven't any spare cash to buy a nice cobby hunter.
Im afraid I too have been looking for something but had no luck at all. Only seen 1 that I would even consider looking at for the price and unfortunately she was in Wiltshire.
I want something smaller with the potential for BD.
Yes I have travelled over 300 mls to view before but not got time to go that far at the mo.
the price for older horses does seem to be higher these days, and I think that is a good thing, it is such a pity that most people think a horse in its early teens is past it, when infact it is those horses that should be going on to play schoolmaster roles with those that need to learn, & so they really do deserve to hold their prices.
I think where it seems to of gone mad is that anything deemed remotely smart & with potential has jumped up over 10k, considerably!
I spoke to a dealer recently, who deals in the upper end of the market, and he pointed out that there are only a limited amount of punters in the 20k+ market, so it got me wondering as to why we are seeing so many advertised in that price range?
What is the price for a nice cobby hunter (ID x TB) 9" bone circa 16hh, smart & sound, moves, but not so much that it'll make you throw up you breakfast but enough to get you through a BD Novice without bursting a blood vessel... how much for him... I tell you how much - a kings ransome!! why? because everyone stopped breeding them in favour of potential Olympians by the Flemmings & Votlages of this world... I guess!
ahh, i see
Im currently toying with the idea of selling mine atm, and getting another-not quite sure yet-shes an absolute angel of a mare; but beginning to realise she might not ever be the most natuaral sj-er!
I've got a 6yo NF Pony for sale at the moment, and I have had very few enquiries for him, those that came were from either people wanting him for dressage (not really his thing) or people wanting safe plods. He's top breeding, loves to jump and go fast but good natured too. None were suitable. The "going rate" for similar quality NF ponies seems to be about £4k, I put him on for a fair bit less than that thinking it might help people call, but no... I'm thinking that I should take down his adverts in the local shops, otherwise if he's still being advertised there come the spring, people will think there's something wrong with him...

Haha! how true! That's just what I'd love, but you're right they are thin on the ground. You don't even see them come up for sale often!
I think at the moment with mortgage rates going up, feed prices going up - hay bales costing over £6 per bale in some parts that people just can't afford to keep horses at the moment.
A friend of mine is trying to sell her 13.2 section B mare who is a complete angel - perfect for all types of riders but no one is interested in her, and she has a four yr old sectionA show pony which people keep coming to look at but no one wants to buy either of them.
I am updating this post to say - I finally found a new horse & not for silly money and he is Luuuvly! & Funnily enough his name is King LOL! o yes, and at 3 years & unbroken he was 2.5k so I think the prices are coming down now!
BTW I have had him 4 months, he is now broken and he is proving to be a wee tropper & everything I asked for
