Ok, perhaps it's because I haven't had to horse hunt for a long time but seriously... just enquired about a 8yo with a chequered BE record that wind sucks with no notable breeding and they want 20k. Have I missed something?

The horse world has always been mad, to be fair.

But yes, based off of numerous threads here, the market is hot and has exploded a bit. People might be putting out higher prices than usual just to see if anyone bites while the market is hot.

I bought a chance find ten days ago after finding that the market is currently insane.

Horses are selling unseen within hours of an advert going up for ridiculous amounts of money for what they are and dealers are advertising for horses to buy to restock.

Wait until the furlough ends and there will be a lot of horses for sale, I reckon.

I think I will have to do this. You would think a mid 5 figure budget would buy you something half decent to do RC stuff on but quite clearly not!

I would like to do BE eventually so that's why the budget is higher but I'm totally shocked by the prices currently. Quite clearly been out of the buying market too long.

friend of a friend is selling what looks to be a nice all rounder who’s done a few be events. Don’t know the horse personally but do know folks who have vouched for him. from the ad, I’d say he’s a good price in this market. Horse quest ad #230935

Thank you but a little small for me. Sadly I'm nearly 6' with stupidly long legs so need something bigger. What I wouldn't give to be able to be short enough for a NF or a connie!

It is totally insane. And it can't last much longer I don't think. But with eventing re-opening horses that are ready to event now are going to be even more desirable/unaffordable for a couple of months I think. The yard next door to ours deals. They are selling everything they have for mega bucks at the moment and constantly looking for new stock.

Last year I went horse shopping with a £5k budget for a really low level novice friendly happy hacker, preferably an older horse, didn't mind a bit of wear and tear as I am not jumping or anything else like that. Turned out this was really not a lot of money.

Unfortunately the market has been silly for a while I think. I’ve had a few friends looking for nice RC types and they can’t find anything for less than 10k. It’s silly!! I think it’s possibly due to SO many people who are buying and selling as their job now so prices are higher as they are buying the nice types cheaper and then doubling their money straight away! I also think this is partially to blame for people buying unsuitable horses eg novices buying ex racers and youngsters and not being able to cope because anything else they have to take a mortgage out to buy! And even when you pay that silly amount for a nice allrounder they usually come with issues! One of my friends has lost 2 horses she’s bought within the first year, One 4 year old had sacroiliac disease and the other was 6 and had irreparable tendon sheath damage. Scary! I wouldn’t want to go and buy a ‘ridden’ horse any more

two years ago I was shopping for a first horse my budget was €2000-€3000. I just wanted a kick along type of horse that had experienced. I literally couldn’t find anything in my budget . I ended up buying a horse that was lazy , was green at jumping didn’t have much experience at all . A lot of sellers were asking €7000 for kick along type of horse . I think the horse market has gone crazy in the last few years.

If you add up the time spent producing horses to BE 90 or so, all the hours of dressage, jumping hiring xc venues etc on top of buying a nice 4 year old at a reasonable price (Itd cost 2-3k + to breed and produce a 4yr old) I think people are wanting to buy experienced horses for less than they cost to produce.
Do people not realise the work that goes into these horses? The hours hard graft and travelling? The shoes, vet costs, general keep - it all adds up.
I bought my ISH mare for 1400eu 3 years ago, she was 4. she has now got points at 90 and 1m, and has won pure dressage, is a good hack and has excellent manners ..... but I would hate to add up what she has actually cost me in the 3 years I've had her.

I agree that the horses that have had this time and money put in demand a higher price but I do object to the people who pay 2/3k for a nice type from Ireland and as soon as it comes off the boat it’s got a 5/6k price tag without any extra work apart from a clip and maybe a bath! Just seems terribly unfair and prices people out the market for a nice usually average horse

And houses! My daughter is trying to buy at the moment, houses are going on and selling the next day! One sold over the blinking phone and her viewing was cancelled ?‍♀️ Crazy crazy times ?

Wow, sorry she’s having trouble. It’s a shame my Mum’s house isn’t quite ready to put on the market yet, I expect prices will be much lower by the time she’s done the jobs and redecorated ☹️

I’m not looking to buy and I may well have a different opinion if I was, but personally I am glad that good horses are selling for prices that reflect the hard work that has gone into producing them. At the end of the day if you want a well educated ‘finished article’ with no ridden issues, health problems or vices that is already doing the job you want it to do and has a reasonable competition record you need a decent budget. If you have a modest budget you need to be prepared to make compromises or buy something that needs more work and time put into it. To be honest I don’t think that has changed but the prices have sky rocketed because demand seems to be outstripping supply for both types at the moment.

I happened to flick on preloved dogs section last night and the prices were absolutely stupid, 2.5k for a puppy? 2k for a collie puppy? the list went on and on and the prices ... well i was tempted to message and ask them what planet they were on but i got in trouble last time i did that :(

I bought a project during lockdown and if all goes well and we keep heading in the right direction she will be a lovely allrounder by the end of summer and I will be in for a profit should i sell .... not that thats going to happen ;)

I’ve got a good collection of overpriced yaks I’ve enquired about.

The one with no BE record who’s just had kissing spine surgery for £8k

The one with a good BE record ending in 2018. It’s since done a leg with noticeable bowing. £9.5k

The ottb who has been out of training a few weeks, trotting round a tiny course very greenly but has ‘serious potential’ and is £6.5k

No fewer than FOURTEEN lame horses on video. All over £6k

The one who is 10, has done nothing and been nowhere but (has potential), good set of upside down muscle but is dun £10k

Most of these horses would ‘definitely have got to novice/won badminton grassroots’ etc if not for darn Covid.

I could go on, and on, and on.

It’s not good prices for good horses that most people are complaining about...
