Has your dog ever lost use of hind legs? advice pls asap!!

Went to walk my 2 year old great dane last night to find her dragging 1 of her back legs, she had no pain but could not use the leg and the other was not very stable, we took her to the vet's who have run x -rays and say everything appears normal on x-ray nothing physical, but could be neurological, she could refer to ortho specialist but would cost upwards of £2000 and problem could still be neurological, she phoned whilst she was still on table, leading me to think her advice would be to pts :(, i am gutted and asked for time as obviously i want to do what is best for her any experience/advice???
 
Depends if you have the money for tests. Could be temporary due to some nerve damage that is treatable or there could be something more going on. From the sounds of it the spinal cord isn't damaged so it sounds as if the messages aren't getting through for some reason and again, all depends if you cam afford the investigations? Is she any better or unchanged today?
 
I don't have £2000 but will raise it if she will be given a quality of life, vet says unchanged today and has only urinated when unconcious on table so she is worried she has no bladder function either, did mention giving her a steriod injection as a possible, but did not seem particularly hopeful that would do anything
 
Is there any chance your dog has been bitten by a tick?
Its a long shot but i saw a case on animal planet of a dog with paralysis of the back legs because of the toxins in a tick bite.

If not that then i have no clue, fingers crossed your girl gets better xx
 
Don't think so, but they have not run bloods so will have to ask if maybe could be a poisening? Hope she gets better too we are devestated, we also own her mother who has been attending the vets due to tumours so the thought of losing bell so young and so suddenly is horrendous! x
 
One of my mums cavaliers went out into the garden fine, and came back in dragging both back legs behind her, we rushed her to the vets, where they kept her in overnight, im not sure what they gave her but by the morning she was able to stand, was put on cage rest for a month, with weekly vet checks, she is now having hydrotherapy to build up muscle and make her back end stronger, which really seems to be helping, they thought hers was a slipped disc.

Is there any possibility she could have eaten any macadamia nuts? I know these can cause temporary paralisis to a dog's hind for up to 72 hours. Usually make a full recovery with no side effects! Fingers crossed for you.
 
I looked after a smaller dog who lost use of his back legs (the day after they left!) turned out to be a slipped disc that popped back into place but had pressed the spinal cord. No surgery needed, lots if Physio and his bladder function did return as well. Full recovery took maybe 3 months but he was walking within a few weeks (as if he was a bit drunk at 1st!) the X-rays didn't pick it up well as the disc had gone back in. He was insured so the MRI scan showed the area of damage.
