for any reason...
If this imaging was not done at your own vet clinic, and you had to get it done at a specialist hospital/vet centre did your own vet then see the images? Or just the specialist/staff at the hospital?
Ive seen all images of my horses taken at my own vets' surgery but just asking as my vet asked me to send her the MRI images(taken at the vet hospital, that I have to pay extra for them to send them to me) that have led to my horse being diagnosed with a condition and is now rehabilitating..as she hasnt even seen them herself!

The more questions and opinions I seek the more I want a 2nd opinion on my horses future.
How does one go about getting a 2nd opinion from a) diff vet at the practice or b) diff vet entirely.
Dont want to put noses out of joint but is my horse TBF.

Sorry to hear about the injury. I've had horses who have had scintigraphy for various conditions in the past and always as part of the diagnostic process, ie further xrays have been taken of the area that has shown up as a "hot spot" and a sight of concern. Both the scintigraphy and the follow up work have taken place at the nearest vet hospital to us and from that point on I have followed the advice of the vet hospital vet with my own one being copied into correspondence and doing routine support at home. Any further investigation or follow up work or checkups have been done back at the vet hospital again.

To be honest I'm not sure if the scan images or copy xrays are ever sent to my vet from the vet school but my guess would be that they are not. I do know that I have always received a copy of the report that the vet school sends to my vet and I summarising their findings and detailing treatment.

When I've had horses vetted and gone the whole hog and had xrays done I've received these on a disk from the vet who carried out the vetting at no extra cost (well, the cost was probably absorbed in the huge bill, if you know what I mean!)

Not sure that this helps much?

I took my pony for a second opinion last month. Fed up with local vets ( although all very nice) not telling me anythng. Took him to Oakham. Local vets were fine about it, sent all his history etc. After two days of nerve blocks and scans I now have one happy pony and owner after being diagnosed with PSD and has now been operated on!

My mare had to go to my vets practice for x-rays on her back - she wasn't happy being ridden and i mearly suggested to my vet that it might be a problem with her back -He x-rayed her back and diagnosed kissing spine. I didn't feel that my vet was doing enough for her (long story...she was supposed to be referred to Liphook vet hospital but my vet kept putting off the referal and in the end i changed vets) so i asked him for the x-rays to send to my new vet. I had no problems getting the x-rays as i had paid my bill in full and as he had charged me for the x-rays, they really belonged to me.

I'm glad i got the 2nd vet involved as it turned out the mare also had an old fracture to her fetlock which was causing her problems...the 1st vet didn't bother checking for any other problems after he discovered the kissing spine.

I should also add that i had ths mare vetted before i bought her and neither problem was picked up on because she had been out of work due to having a foal. The problems started about 3 months into her ridden work.

So TBH if your not happy i would deffinately seek a 2nd opinion.

Merlin had scintigraphy (sp) or a bone scan to you and I, and he had to go to another practice, but not only did my vet discuss the results with the practice in person, but I was given a set of the scan pictures free of charge for me to discuss with the vet....

It was really useful to be able to see what was going on 'inside' the shell!!!

Our pony fractured a leg whilst on loan. We were not happy with the treatment and I asked the vets to send a copy of the x-ray to my own vet. They were very reluctant to do so as they said the x-rays were their property! My vet said he had no actual right to see them but if he was in their position he would forward them to another vet. In the end we did get the x-rays sent, and I am glad to say once we got her home and got my vet involved she made a good recovery.

I had, xrays, mri and scintigraphy (sp) done on my last horse. He had to go to another practice for the mri and scinitigraphy. There was always alot of communication between my normal vet and the other practice. They did this without me asking. When the results came through a vet at the other practicewent through them with me, but we would then go and speak to my normal vet to make decisions etc.

I would expect my own vet to look at xrays etc even if they had been done at another practice. However i have never had to ask for a second opinion.

my old pony had bone scans and xrays at a vet hospital, and they wouldnt give us any of the scan picutres or anything. they wrote a written report to my vet at home, but even this report we wernt allowed to see.
we followed the advice of the vets hospital, and worked with our home vet at the same time.
Maybe if we had been persistant they would have given us the reports etc, but they wouldnt, and this i disliked.
however, i suppose you just have to work with the advice you are given, and the vets hospital is known to be good, so we just followed them
we never looked into 2nd opinions, so i cant say what they would have been like, maybe not too happy, as they did seem to like to keep thier reports under wraps.

My horse was referred by my vet to an Equine hospital for MRI.

Both my vet and myself were sent a full report with findings and recommendations, and a set of pictures of the MRI from various angles.

I assumed that was normal practice, to send a copy of the report to (a) the vet that referred the horse, and (b) the paying customer.

Since the whole point of a diagnostic procedure is to help the horse, I think it would be unprofessional not to send the findings in their entirety to both the vet and the client.

My horse had to have X rays and a scan- my vets did this themselves and have the equipment- we knew what the problem was the same day. I know there are only about 1 or 2 places (one is the AHT Newmarket) I think that does the MRI. I wouldn't hesitate in changing Vets if you are unhappy or asking your own vet to set up a referral to a top specialist.

If you decide to change, you just need to tell the new vet the case history and who your current Vet is and they will contact them- it's just for ethical reasons really.

Good luck-

hello, my horse had ultrasound and mri this year. I have just rung today and asked to get a copy of the scans (don't really know whether that's on a disc or print outs or what but will see what turns up!). It was my vets (who are an equine specialist) who did the whole lot.
I am considering getting a second opinion and probaably will, after Xmas when my bank balance has had a small chance of recovering! I am hoping they will be able to just look at the scans, talk to me about the treatment my mare has had, and tell me if it sounds reasonable to them.
Let me know how you get on - i've never done the second opinion thing but think I'm going to have to for peace of mind. i have not got much confidence left in my vets. good luck.
