-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis?......13 years old.

-What was the suspected cause?.......Insulin Resistant

-What treatment did you give him/her?........Box Rest with Bute and Sedalin
..Gel pads fitted on front feet..Xrays...Soaked hay..Low Sugar/Low Starch diet.

-How effective do you feel the treatment was?.............Very effective..He has made a brilliant recovery.

-Has he/she now made a full recovery?.............It has been 6 months since he came down with it..He has been 100% for the last 4 months.Just about to get the all clear to start working him again.

8 years old, one acute episode.
Overweight and only ryegrass forage available
Box rest with bute for a few days, box rest, yard rest and then turnout in bare paddock/muzzled spring to autumn
Full recovery and back in work the spring after it happened in the autumn. However diet is now restricted and low sugar and weight monitored, and I see it as a lifelong condition to be managed. Thankfully she has a home for life and I am determined it will not happen again
She has never worn shoes but as farrier very hard to get to come regularly in our remote location, and in order to treat the whole horse, I now use an excellent Uknhcp Trimmer and the hooves and action have improved vastly since that started.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis? - 13 years

-What was the suspected cause? - YO rich hay on top of spring grass.

-What treatment did you give him/her? - Bute, Sedalin, Imprints, X-rays, Vet, Farrier, 8 months complete box rest, Weighed & soaked hay, shavings & lots of love.

-How effective do you feel the treatment was? - Very good.

-Has he/she now made a full recovery? - Yes, she is back to normal.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis?
He was 12 years old
-What was the suspected cause?
Combination of farrier letting hooves get too long, and I was away on hols for 2 weeks so he was not exercised and out 24/7, which was not his normal routine.
-What treatment did you give him/her?
Box rest and bute. He had heart bars put on as recommended by vets.
-How effective do you feel the treatment was?
Not 100% convinced on the success of the heart bars and the box rest was the worst thing in the world for him. He stressed himself inside out and was box walking for hours every day. He then started to refuse to eat (think this was not helped by the high levels of bute he was meant to have), dropped a tonne of weight and in the end I said enough is enough. I made him a small corral outside his stable on the bare grass and he went from strength to strength both in appetite and foot recovery...should have done that a lot sooner on hindsight.
-Has he/she now made a full recovery?
Yes but his management has changed since then. He is now stabled at night throughout the entire year on soaked hay and strip grazed more rigorously.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis? 17

-What was the suspected cause? Cushings

-What treatment did you give him/her? Rimadyl, prascend, box rest, heart bar shoes with gel soles

-How effective do you feel the treatment was? Prascend didn't get Cushings under control fast enough so laminitis progressed

-Has he/she now made a full recovery? No pts when pedal bone came through sole.

If your horse has got/ had laminitis please could you answer the following questions? The answers will help me to complete my Extended Project Qualification on the causes of laminitis.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis? 25 ish

-What was the suspected cause? Vet thought it was that we'd had such a wet warm summer the grass had just kept growing like fresh spring grass, instead of being scorched if we'd had a hot summer, or it could have been his age, as he wasn't overweight and exercised daily. Had xrays couple of times before and after treatment

-What treatment did you give him/her? Box rest, deep bed, danilon, not much hay for the first couple of weeks then in increased. Contacted Laminitis Trust and followed what them and my vet said re feed hay etc.

-How effective do you feel the treatment was? Very

-Has he/she now made a full recovery? Yes he is 34 now, wears a muzzle when turned out and has soaked hay, spillers high fibre cubes

Thank you for participating, it is much appreciated!

Completed as below.

If your horse has got/ had laminitis please could you answer the following questions? The answers will help me to complete my Extended Project Qualification on the causes of laminitis.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis? 11

-What was the suspected cause? Caused by weight bearing following an op to remove a sequestrum. Had a cast fitted and developed laminitis two days later.

-What treatment did you give him/her? Box rest, x-rays, Bute, remedial shoeing, restricted grazing, lose weight, soak haynets, pad feet when turned out, don't turn out on frost, muzzled when necessary. Also tested for EMS. Negative result.

-How effective do you feel the treatment was? Been on going since June. He has suffered rotation so cannot be ridden at the moment. Is now on half a Bute every other day. Remedial Shoeing has saved him.

-Has he/she now made a full recovery? Not yet. More x-rays due next month.

Thank you for participating, it is much appreciated!

My answers below:

If your horse has got/ had laminitis please could you answer the following questions? The answers will help me to complete my Extended Project Qualification on the causes of laminitis.

-How old was your horse when he/she developed laminitis? - 19 years old
-What was the suspected cause?
- confirmation/concussion & poor care in a previous home (we think its probable she had it before I got her) - she only had lami in 1 front foot, other 3 had no problems
-What treatment did you give him/her? - prolonged box rest, initially painkillers/bute, imprint shoes, heart bar shoes progressing into normal shoes and now barefoot - she was also retired.
-How effective do you feel the treatment was? - the imprint shoes were the biggest turning point, and her relief in them was obvious.
-Has he/she now made a full recovery? - yes, although is closely managed as lami prone, and is retired, but this is as much to do with her age as the lami attack she had.

Thank you for participating, it is much appreciated!
